schoolmarm4 Posted October 16, 2010 #1 Share Posted October 16, 2010 We are thinking of just renting a car in Phillipsburg and doing a "self-guided" tour. Found this website that had lots of info with pictures and maps - http://www.sint-Maarten-Islandtour/IslandTour.html Says there is only one main road around the island and you can't get lost. Has anyone done this? Any advice or reasons why it may not be a good idea?
gtaylor Posted October 17, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 17, 2010 There was a discussion here earlier this summer about the options of taking a tour or renting a car. You might like to read that one. gary

Has anyone done this? Any advice or reasons why it may not be a good idea? It's a wonderful idea, just allow plenty of time to get back to the ship. Traffic can get heavy, you can be delay with the bridge up for large boats. I would allow at least 1.5 hours to 2.00 hours to get back and return the car. You may not need that much time but better to be early than late. We have taken land tours to STM and always rent a car. Very easy but the traffic nerve racking if you are short on time. Oh, one other thing, don't leave anything of value in the car or trunk. The thieves love tourists. Enjoy:)

Forgot to add that one reason we chose this option is that I am mobility impaired and by renting a car we can put the scooter in the trunk. Will it be safe? (Asking because you said not to leave anything of value in the car or trunk).
