The conversion may vary a little depending on where you spend your money. It has been hovering around 19 lemp per US dollar for a long time now. You will find several car rental agencies located in/near the Port of Roatan shops who will be more than glad to rent a car to you for the day!

thanks - any ideas or concerns that I should have about driving on the island or any safety security issues?

We were there this past Thursday and we rented a Ford Ranger from Thrifty for $80 for the whole day (@ Mahogany Bay)! There are a lot of steep hills and curvy roads and the drivers weren't that bad, they were actually very courteous.

It's easier to rent a car/driver from Victor Bodden and let them do the driving. The cost would be about the same as renting a car and you don't have to worry about any damage that may occur in the chuck holes. The roads on Roatan are not that great and about 1/2 of the island has any type of driveable road. The east end of the island can only be reached by boat. The island is somewhat undeveloped for tourists although it has been 5 years since I've been there (going back next month). Except for the stretch of road in front of the Governors home the rest of the island roads are pretty rough.

I have been to this small island a few times. Bodden just refused to take us where I wanted to go so I will be looking to rent a car as well.

Check the threads carefully. There have been several that have mentioned getting "taken" by some of these car rental agencies.
