train from Montreal to Quebec

Recommended Posts

Is it hard to take the train from montreal to Quebec and in Quebec is the train far from the port

The train station in Québec City (Gare du Palais) is very convenient for the port' date=' much more so than the airport in fact. It's about a 15-20 minute walk, 5-minute taxi ride, or about 3-4 stops on the city bus (route 1). Several small boutique-style hotels in the area too if you're arriving a day or two early.[/color']

I don't think that the train from Montréal to Québec is any more difficult or any easier than any other ordinary train. Service operates several times each day, and the cars are reasonably comfortable. Is there a particular attribute of these trains that is questioned?

There are various berths at which cruise ships dock, the closest of which is indeed a reasonably short walking distance from the Gare du Palais. However, there are some berths much further away, beyond the distance most people are willing to walk. When we traveled out of Québec in 2009 the Norwegian Spirit was one of those vessels, and while we would have preferred to walk it was too distant to do so with luggage in tow.

Yes, in 2009 NCL was using the berth at Anse-au-Foulon, further along the St. Lawrence, but last year, they started to use a berth (30 I believe) which is actually behind the train station when the two main berths (22 and 21) were taken. I think only one or two ships used Anse-au-Foulon last year, and none were turnarounds.

The method of dealing with luggage on the train is to carry it on with you. You're allowed two pieces per ticket. You can place the luggage above your seat or at the end of the car.

If you arrive at the station much earlier than the scheduled departure time you may leave your luggage at the baggage room; there is a nominal charge ($3 per piece). Or for the greatest convenience, summon a red cap and give your luggage to him. He will then place your luggage on board the train, either above your seat or at the end of the car, leaving you free to see Montréal without any luggage worries, and also to descend to the platform without being burdened. This service would entail a tip to the red cap at your discretion.
