Hilton Southampton

We are departing from Southampton next August 2013. Has anyone stayed at the Hilton Southampton recently. I don't see a long of inspiring reports. We travel on points; so at least we can use them at this property.

We stayed at the Hilton last June for the first time, pre-TA (also the first time!). It was OK, no more than that (the Hilton I mean - the TA was amazing!). We found the staff friendly enough, but nothing exceptional. And that sort of sums up the hotel for us, really - the room was OK, dinner was (just about) OK, breakfast was OK.

The previous year we stayed at Chilworth Manor. Not a lot to choose, really, except that Chilworth Manor was a bit more shabby. Neither was good enough to make us want to go back, so next year we're trying the Holiday Inn with harbour view, If that doesn't work, we'll probably stay in the New Forest in future.

To sum up, in my view the Hilton's OK if you get a good deal (or if you have points to use), probably not so much if you don't.

I did play on Staying there as part of my Planned Trip, as it was one of the Post Voyage options on the Cunard Package, but when re-doing a test Booking the price suddenly went from £89 pp to £187pp I decided I will go with a city centre Hotel. Plus the idea of going a day early seems to be slightly negated by staying at a location that could still be effected by a Traffic problem.

I've used the Holiday Inn a couple of times and I would say that your mini review of the Hilton is 100% accurate for the Holiday Inn too. It's adequate for a one night, pre-cruise stay but no more than that.

Also, I would avoid the place like the plague if the Southampton Boat show is on. That happened to us last month and I discovered that the entire car park in front of the hotel was closed to guests and had been given over to trade stands associated with the boat show. The only parking available was round the back of the hotel and had only a tiny number of spaces available for guests. The hike from there to the hotel entrance, burdened with luggage, was quite considerable.
