Entertainment at Sea

Bridge Maven

Recommended Posts

There was a time when I enjoyed cheesy entertainment at sea that I would never go to see at home because I thought it was part of the get away from it all vacation experience. However, now that we have been on so many cruises I feel that second rate entertainment is no more enjoyable at sea than it is at home.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

I put cheesy entertainment in the same category as the silly games other cruise lines have such as sexy legs contest, hairy chest contest, etc. Most passengers who participate in these games wouldn't think of doing anything that silly at home but consider it to be part of the get away from it all vacation experience.

it appears that I am the only one who feels this way :)

My college undergraduate degree was in English and Theatre, so I do enjoy attending production shows at sea. I just wish they were of a higher quality.

I do not attend the "welcome aboard" show or any talent shows.

I enjoy live entertainment around the ship especially the string quartet and the piano player. I made the mistake on my last Century cruise of attending the "battle of the sexes" game and will ensure that I don't make that mistake in the future. I did enjoy the cooking demonstration and the "iron chef" like cooking competition.

Production shows are worse than summer stock.

Talent shows, dancing competitions and karaoke are a cheap form of entertainment for the ships as the vacationer is providing the talent or lack there of. In my opinion the cruise ship is ripping us off by listing this as entertainment.

Most comedians or magicians are just repeats to me as these performers continue to do the cruise circuit as they jump from ship to ship.

I prefer the casino and bars/pubs on the ship and enjoy the smaller bands, piano bar, guitarists, etc.

When we do go to the evening shows, I am sorry to admit that I usually fall asleep! Once, in Honolulu, they brought local children on board to do various hulas, etc. I really wanted to see this and we had dinner upstairs, so as not to miss it. Sure enough, I slept through most of it!

During the day, we do not partake in bingo, trivia, or what have you. We used to play duplicate on seadays, but as you know, now that is a thing of the past.

So, for us, cruising is just a relaxing vacation. We go to beaches to walk and swim, we read, dear hubby snoozes, I like massages. This is what I am most looking forward to on our upcoming 21 day b2b.

Obviously none of you folks were on the Eclipse this past week because all the shows were great and the performers were talented.

The production show "Edge" was spectacular as was the Ukraine String Quartet and the A Capella group in different venues throughout the ship. Lloyd in Michaels Club was a great lounge singer and piano player. Took requests and knew every one of them. A real trooper.

And the cruise director, Paul Banya (sp?) could have made a career in singing.

Maybe I'm not an expert on talent but did retire as a full professor of voice and theatre from a Big Ten school.

Bridge maven, and others, I agree on the shows, we were on the equinox about a week ago, I think the productions shows have lost their edge and not overly enjoyable. I will however state that the folks singing, dancing, truly put their hearts into the shows. Just not sure they have the same value as years ago. But some of the headliners where OUTSTANDING, the violinist was tremendous. I also agree with the diversity of entertainment, had to match. But just as the food on cruises perhaps it has to change up

i just wish there was something to do/a place to go, music for all of us baby boomers who don't want to go to bed at midnight. i feel we are the target client, and the club upstairs clears out pretty fast when they change the music. don't they get it, or am i missing something............

I'm with you. My only criticism of our recent Summit cruise was with the shows. There was no late night comedy act, only a "family friendly show" at the regular times. The music acts were heavily skewed to dance (as in salsa, tango, Latin line dancing) and nothing for those of us without any dance skills!! I loved the couple "Tango for Two" who played at the Cova Cafe and Charlie Butler and the aft bar. Celebrity is missing an opportunity with Michael's Club imo; hopefully when they are turned in to sports/craft beer bars they will add more upbeat music and/or dueling pianos.

Don't go to the production shows as there are not my cup of tea.

I guess with cut backs being made the standard of entertainment has had to be reduced, I thought it was best described as " buskers " who in a lot of cases would work for the money they make from the sale of their CDs, the theatre was only a third full most nights and on deck entertainment boring, I think this is a sign of the times with Celebrity.

As was mentioned on our Equinox trip 1/7, they had a violinist Nicola Loud who was fantastic, standing "O"'s etc she did not have any CD's for sale, she put on a stunning show. I just think the production shows have tried to do to much but have the same format, 2 male singers, 2 female singers and dancers. Not sure what you do actually as they are no longer the Vegas style show. based on when we ate, we went to the late show each evening (except for one night) and it was full, even the singers / dancers commented on that during a back stage tour.

Oh well I will take those shows at sea vs watching TV at home

Curatokid, the entertainers on Celebrity who try to sell their CD's remind me of the free retirement planning seminars on land who try to sell their financial services.

not as good as it once was, we enjoyed the coaters, platters, drifters, John Pinette and alot more name acts in past years, but the stuff on there now wouldn't make the pocono circuit. Kinda like the lobster dinner on formal night, the quality just keeps on shrinking.......

Oh you mean the 1/2 lobster tail, I bet eventually they will hand out music as you go in and then play the music with the band and we will have to be the singers

Whoooosh
