LoriPhil Posted January 24, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 24, 2011 We are new to snorkeling and were at our local dive shop to check out masks and snorkels. They recommended masks with a purge feature - is this easier to use than clearing a conventional mask? We also saw a (pricier) snorkel that was wider than the others; is wider better or more of a hassle pulling against your mask as you dive down? They will plunk us in the pool to practice with our equipment when we purchase but I wanted to do a bit of research first. I suspect that after this first cruise/snorkeling experience, DH may sign us up for certification. :D Thanks! Lori
Friscorays Posted January 24, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 24, 2011 I prefer non-purge masks and snorkels with dry valve feature.
King Neptune Posted January 24, 2011 #3 Share Posted January 24, 2011 I also prefer a non-purge mask. I've see some people really struggle with them but some people really love them so trying them out in the pool is really your best option. I'm not familiar with a "wide" snorkel but I agree that getting a dry snorkel makes life easier.
bltpyro Posted January 24, 2011 #4 Share Posted January 24, 2011 Since it sounds like you will be diving down, I would definitely go with a non-purge mask. The purge valve is a weak spot and pinching your nose often to equalize your ears can weaken the bond of the silicon to the plastic valve and cause it to break. Then your mask will flood and ruin your dive (happened to me). It is plenty easy to clear a mask without the valve.
LoriPhil Posted January 25, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted January 25, 2011 Thanks - sounds like I'll be going for the non-purge mask - save that extra cash for something else!
peter_krynicki Posted January 25, 2011 #6 Share Posted January 25, 2011 Thanks - sounds like I'll be going for the non-purge mask - save that extra cash for something else! I only snorkel a few times a year and so just use the equipment provided on the trips. Mostly the mask is the type with one flat lens. But after using one of the more panoramic ones, it made enough of a difference that I intent to buy my own next trip to Key West. It is very close to not realizing you have a mask on.
