how much rum or whatever can u buy at a port and bring on boat

You can buy as much as you want. Security will take it from you when you board in a port and keep it until the last evening. Anything over a Gallon**, and you may be charged duty on the overage. Just declare it on your customs form and half, and more, of the time they don't charge duty. Don't declare it and they'll take the booze and fine you.

If they charge duty, its a very small amount, $2 bucks a bottle thereabouts.

**a little more if the ship stops at the US Virgins and/or PR,

As far as I know, You can buy however much you want, but you will not be able to bring it on the ship yourself. If the shop doesn't send it directly to the ship, they will confiscate it when you board and hold it until the last night when they deliver it to your room.

Also, you can only bring in 2? 750ml bottles of alcohol into the US duty free. Any more than that and you will need to pay duty(Which isn't much, and is only if they actually pay attention or care.)

For as I know, duty free is 1 Liter per adult .....

there are some weird allowances for rum purchased in San Juan????

Bring as much as you want...you will get it delivered the last night to your cabin.

The only EXCEPTION to bringing back as much as you want is if you are traveling from Texas. Texas ABC laws only allow one liter per resident and 3.75 liters for non-residents.

Federal law allows one liter duty free per person. Anything over the limit you will have to pay a fee. Usually the Custom's agent wont bother you if you have around 4-6 liters. In Mobile and New Orleans it is about $3.09 per liter over the limit. The exception to this Federal law is if the ship docks in a US Territory such as San Juan or St. Thomas. Then it goes up to five liters per person.
