gonecruising Posted January 30, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 30, 2011 Just back from the spectacular Oasis of the Seas from a back-to-back cruise Jan.14 Eastern Caribbean and Jan. 22 Western Carribean. Weather was fabulous first week..so no much the second. We are Diamond members who took advantage of the Diamond Lounge as well as Casino Royale members. Our original cabin for the first week was 10600 on the hump, great location, quiet and great cabin attendant, Freydy, from Peru. We were miraculously upgraded to a Junior Suite on deck 14, cabin 14632, also on the hump for the second week. While much larger with walk-in closet and tub/shower combo, deck 14 is not ideal for quiet as the H2O zone was right above us. During the day if you were in your cabin for a nap, there was the noise of kids running around above you, and late at night pool attendants dragging and stacking chairs. Not terrible enough to leave, but not ideal. Deck 14 would not be my first choice for a suite, but due to the fact we were upgraded fot the first time ever in 25 years, I chose to take advantage of it. So if you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer as best I can relative to the cruise, Diamond Club, Casino, entertainment, whatever.
passion?cruising Posted January 30, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 30, 2011 I'm so glad you had a great time and experienced the upgrade. I'm Diamond + and still waiting for my first. It's interesting to hear about deck 14. I was afraid of the noise issue and you confirmed it. I don't usually book one deck down from the pool deck just for that reason. Thanks for the post and glad you had a good time. Wasn't the Sand Beach pool the best??!!! LOVED IT!!! :D
Liztoybiz Posted January 30, 2011 #3 Share Posted January 30, 2011 Gonecrusin, Thanks so much for offering feedback! Which did you enjoy more, Eastern or Western? Or if you are like am, you've visited the ports before and the ship is the destination. On the Western route, which nights were formal? Also, did you do any specialty restaurants? And which were your favorite shows, entertainment, bars. Any opinions are helpful. And finally, as someone who enjoys casinos, how did you find this one? Was it too smokey? And on both sides? Also, what kinds of slots do they have, do they have a single '0' roulette, and how many roulette wheels? Many thanks and glad you had fun! Liz ps. Way to go on the upgrade! gonecruising Posted January 30, 2011 Author #4 Share Posted January 30, 2011 Liz: I love the eastern ports better..except for the fact that we did Labadee on the western cruise. We actually didn't get off the ship the first week. As you mentioned, the ship WAS the destination. You actually dock at Crown Bay in St. Thomas, not the usual Havensight. It looked nice and they had some shops and just a $5 cab ride to Havensight..But been there, done that. We did get off the second week in Labadee and they have poured a ton of money into renovating...not like the Labadee of the 1980's. Formal nights both weeks were the same..first sea day evening (Sunday) and next to last night (Thursday). We did do Chops the first week...I remember it being better on other ships. We have a 9:00 pm reservation for 6 and at 10:45, the waiter offered us another round of appetizers because the kitchen was slammed. At 11:15 we got our entrees. filet mignons seemed to be the winner..my ribeye, just okay. Then desserts, coffee..we got out around midnight..like I said, it was just okay, with a very long wait. The following week we dined at Giovannis...dinner was GREAT! and we had a fabulous waiter, Guven from Turkey. Ask for him if you go there. Food was fabulous and test out their balsamic vinegar on something..wonderful. Okay, the casino..so although they attempt to keep the smoke on one side of the room only, you know as well as I do, this is a losing proposition. The smoke wafts over to the other side..granted it's Less smokey, but still smokey. Actually, there seem to be less people from other countries on the first week, and there was a correlating amount of less smoke on the first week. Western Caribbean cruise had more people from South America and they do smoke more, so thus more smoke in the casino. Either way, if you like to gamble, you're going to go in there anyway. They had a great variety of slots, as I am basically a slot player but also play some cards at Let It Ride and Three Card Poker. A lot of the new machines I saw in Vegas a year ago are there raning from 1-cent upwards with may offering different video slot games and denominations in one machine. Not a roulette player, I think there was only one roulette table and I'm not sure if it had single zero..my guess is that if single 0 does not favor the house, it wasn't there..lol. This was the largest casino at sea I have been in and a great bar..ask for Arlene or Johanna at the bar, they'll mix you a great one! Hope this was helpful..if you have anything else, just let me know. Caryl
fangdoctor Posted January 30, 2011 #5 Share Posted January 30, 2011 Which specialty restaurant is a "don't miss"? Also...we are considering a balcony in the boardwalk right at the tail end but are worried that we will be too far down one end. What do you think, having walked the ship in person? JDMKane Posted January 31, 2011 #6 Share Posted January 31, 2011 Please tell me the free food options? Is the pizza free? How about doughnuts and ice cream? Thanks for your help. Going soon with many teens.
Cruise Cat Posted February 1, 2011 #7 Share Posted February 1, 2011 How did the procedure work for the Back to Back? Did you get right back on the ship or had to wait and got back on when everyone else was? How long total off ship? Were you able to transfer the remainer of a wine package to the second week? Did you get purchased liquor back at the end of the first week?
Kevdog71 Posted February 1, 2011 #8 Share Posted February 1, 2011 Please tell me the free food options? Is the pizza free? How about doughnuts and ice cream? Thanks for your help. Going soon with many teens. The pizza (Sorrento's on the Promenade) is free, as are the doughnut shop (Boardwalk), The Wipe Out Cafe (great kid/teen-friendly fare on deck 15), Central Park Cafe, The Solarium Bistro (except for dinner), Cafe Promenade (most things) and of course the Windjammer and Main Dining Room. Johnny Rockets is also free for breakfast. The ice cream parlor is extra (there's free soft serve by the pools and in the Wipe Out Cafe), as are Johnny Rockets, the Seafood Shack, The Cupcake Cupboard, Chops, Giovanni's Table, 150 Central Park and probably a couple of other things I'm forgetting. gonecruising, we were onboard for your first week and had a sensational time. Still trying to hold on to the warm weather!
cruise wizard Posted February 1, 2011 #9 Share Posted February 1, 2011 Can you tell me who the headliner act was? We are scheduled for the 2/19 Western itinerary - hope to get away from all of this snow and cold.
