Renting a car in Cozumel...suggestions?

Is it easy to rent a car in Cozumel? Do you have any suggestions for us? We'd like to rent and be on our own, do you think that's a good idea?
We're sailing on April 23, NCL Sea.

Renting a car and exploring the island is not only fun but it's also quite safe. Cozumel is a friendly little island and you'll have a blast driving from the cruise ship pier south and around the tip of the island and back up the east coast to the trans island road. So much beauty to take in along the way.

I recommend checking out CozumelInsider for a rental from Avis. Sherri's negotiated some great rates. http://www.cozumelinsider.com/CarRent

You might also want to order a map. I know of two great sources for maps:

We have been to Cozumel many times and each and every time we explored on our own. We will be back in Cozumel on April 25th and have rented a VW convertible from CP Rentals which is located close to the port. Can you believe it $25.00 for the entire day. Their email is www.islacozumel.net. We have made our reservation in advance. Have fun.

You are then it complete control over where you go for the day and there are many beautiful sites to see, especially on the East side of the island. Yes it is easy to rent a car too. Good advice about renting a car in Cozumel is at http://www.cozumelinsider.com/CarRent.
How many people can fit in a VW?
Are you talking legally of just physically. I've seen a family of 4 on a scooter in Cozumel, but I think in cars you are supposed seat belt every one in the car, so I think 4, maybe 5 if some are kids in the back, would be the maximum.
