Mexican Riviera query

We are two Aussies cruising on Carnival Spirit (Feb 11th). We have booked a couple of on shore tours and were wondering if it would be advisable to exchange some cash for Mexican pesos beforehand , or would most of the places you would be taken to, take US dollars? I doubt that we would be using local taxis etc , just a bit of retail therapy to take back home. Thanks for any advice (hope this question hasn't been asked lately but we leave for the US in 18hrs.... but who's counting!):)

99% of the places that you will go will accept American $. Usually at an exchange rate of 10-1. The official rate is around 13-1. It would be best to get pesos at an ATM if needed.

 

Be careful - the sign for pesos is the same as dollars. Usually the signs will be labeled Dllrs.

Make sure you take some small bills, sometimes they cannot change 20's (or say they can't) and you end up with pesos. I have even backed out on a sale when they said they didn't have change. Most often they will go borrow change from someone else to make the sale.
