LOL Parrot.

Lauren, this is what I found on the NCL site.....

What about smoking, drinking and gambling on the ship?

Smoking is only permitted in the designated Smoking Areas and the Open Decks. Guests must be 21 to purchase or drink alcohol or to gamble on the ship. Current legislation prevents us from offering gaming on round-trip Hawaii cruises, and under these circumstances the casino will be closed throughout the voyage.

It's 21. Why should it be any different then the legal drinking age?

You can gamble at the tables in the casino at age 18, not 21. Pretty sure gambling age is 21 in every state that offers tables and slots.

In international waters isn't it kind of anything goes as far as casino and drinking ages?

Because the cruiseships operate in international waters, they are allowed to set their own drinking policies. The rules used to vary quite a bit from cruiseline to cruiseline with some setting the drinking age at 18 and others at 21. There was one cruiseline (I don't remember which one) that allowed the purchase of beer and wine at 18, but required 21 for hard liquor. There was also one cruiseline (again, I don't remember which one) that allowed 18 year olds to purchase beer or wine if they had their parents permission. I think all the major cruiselines have changed their drinking age to 21 now for all alcoholic beverages.

Are you traveling with someone over 21? Maybe you can just have them purchase it for you. I would never suggest this to a true minor, but at 18, I think you are old enough to make your own decision.

It's 21 for the beer, but you can "whine" at any age! :D (Look all over this board - it's full of whiners!) (Present company excluded! :p )

The drinking age on the Dawn is definitely 21 for all types of alcoholic beverages. As stated by Copper_beeches, when they swipe your card it will be flagged as under 21. Plus, they take your card when you order and bring it back with the drink. Tipping large might work.

ALSO, at 11pm each night the Spinnakers lounge turns into a 21 and over bar/club. They station security guards at each entrance. The guards have a list of every cruiser who is under 21. So if they question your age upon entering, they check your card against the under 21 list. If they see your name, they deny entry. If they don't see your time, they let you in. TIP - if you plan on "sneaking" in there....try to go to the last show before 11pm in Spinnakers and hang around inside the lounge under the DJ starts. You won;t be able to buy any drinks, but at least you're in! However, if security notices that your obviously under 21, they will approach you and card you.

Hope this helps.

Just got off the Spirit with my 20 yr old son. He could not buy any drinks with his card but was able to gamble in the casino. They had no problem with serving him drinks charged to my card even when they knew he was under 21.

Every cruise line has different age minimums for drinking and gambling.

NCL, Holland America, Princess, Seabourn, and Disney require you to be 21 to drink or gamble.

Carnival is 21 to drink, 18 to gamble.

Crystal is 18 for beer and wine, 21 for everything else.

Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are 18 to gamble or drink beer and wine.

Radisson Seven Seas and Orient are 18 for everything.

These rules were current as of 2003. Some may have changed since then.
