Small Unique Hotels or bed and breakfast

We will be travelling to Hawaii for 1 week cruise and 1 week on land.

We are going to The Big Island, Mauia and Honolulu for the land part.

Can anyone recomend a small bed and breakfast or unique hotel to stay in, we are looking for a more Hawaiian experience rather then staying at a large resort hotel.

Thanks in advance for the help.

There are hundreds of them listed at http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii Just pick an island or area on the island you want to stay then the amount you would like to spend. Don't discount the cheap ones or you can miss some real jewels (one of our favorite houses is located in Milolii and cost just $43.00 a night if there is a vacancy availabe  ). We also look for rentals on http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rentals/hawaii/r35

For a truly different stay on the Big Island try the village of Volcano. It is cool, misty, and very quiet with a tempo all its own. See VRBO for options - one of my faves is Oma's Hapu'u Hideaway. These folks have a couple of other rentals too.

If you're really not interested in Kilauea and environs this might not be for you, but to wander over to the Jaggar Museum after dark and see the glow from Halemaumau with no sound but the wind is awe-inspiring. It's definitely a true "Hawaii experience" and just about every one of our land trips have included a few days in Volcano.

Be sure and do your research about the areas where you are looking at vacation rentals. Milolii is waaaaaayyyyyy off the beaten path, so if you are looking for restaurants, nightlife, etc. you may want to look elsewhere. But, it is beautiful and quiet and perfect for those that are looking for that type of experience. That can be said for many of the areas on the Big Island. Read the reviews, etc. There are absolute gems that can be had for great prices.....just do your research first.

I honestly think that trying to do the Big Island, Maui and Honolulu all in one week is too much. You would be spending a lot of time in airports and not enjoying the islands. I would only try to do one outer island in addition to Honolulu.

Please tell us what your interests are and we could give you better suggestions!

Be sure to look on the map and see if it will fit your needs. There is some good snorkeling and shore diving right at the house but it is about an hour + to either Hilo or Kona. It is a quaint / beautiful / quiet neighborhood on the side of an old lava flow overlooking the ocean. There are many many houses on the island though that rent for around $100.00 per night so be sure to check out VRBO if this location isn't good for ya.

This is a nice place near the Hilo area also close to the VNP area and current lava flowing sight http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p282758

Two of my personal favorites

I would agree that traveling to all three island in one week will make it tough to enjoy any of the three. Even four days / three days will keep you very busy.

I have several friends and family members who have stayed at Oma's as well, and all give glowing reviews
