cruisinforabruising Posted March 2, 2011 #27 Share Posted March 2, 2011 Oh get off your high horse and go troll elsewhere. Smuggling has nothing to do with your cruise cost. If you feel that way then go yell at the people who bring water onboard or soda.

waterbugohio Posted March 2, 2011 #30 Share Posted March 2, 2011 For the record we have used Rum Runners at least a dozen times during cruises over the past several years. Never had a problem. I don't think they are fool proof by any means but very difficult to detect. Kurt, I can't believe you would actually smuggle alcohol on board!! I am shocked. LOL, actually proud of you and wish we were sailing together again sometime. Hope all is well with you. And to stay on topic. I have never had trouble with the rum runners either!! Also have the small airline bottles in my cosmetic bag and mixed in other areas.

jebl Posted March 2, 2011 #34 Share Posted March 2, 2011 I love my Rum Runners. We usually take one in our checked bag. Usually don't use all of the scotch by the end of the cruise. And for those who think I am hurting the cruise lines profit... NOT SO!! Dh and I still spend plenty of time and money in the lounges, bars, and theater. By taking the rum runner I don't have to run to one of the bars wearing a towel and having wet hair for a pre dinner cocktail while dressing for dinner. Sometimes we will have an afternoon drink on the balcony. I take them as a matter of convience. If RCI would go back to allowing us to purchase liquor in the onboard shops (with an extra charge for in room consumption) there would not be any need for us to 'smuggle'. And that practice would probably help their bottom line.

I could not agree more..I think very few are doing this to save money..It is just convenience..Nothing better before dinner to fix myself a nice jack and water, sit on my balcony and not worry about a thing... I would gladly pay rather than bring my own. I understand Joe's point but bringing your own was a common (and allowed) practice when several of us started cruising. If the line is going to nickel and dime me to death than I suppose it is fair game for the pax to do the same to them.
MAZANDSTEVE Posted March 2, 2011 #38 Share Posted March 2, 2011 I've never ever smuggled before, but my SIL is ridiculous and a co-worker that he idolizes keeps telling him how he has always taken Listerine bottles, carried a bottle of water onboard in his hand filled with vodka, etc. In desperation to AVOID the naughty room, I bought the rum runners. Now I'm in an absolute panic. I guess if he ends up in the naughty room, he can blame me and say he could have gotten his "listerine" through. I have a question...why do they give instructions that include freezing them? Do you put them in the freezer? We will be staying at a hotel prior to the cruise and I just don't understand if we need to freeze them or not. We always purchase beer, frozen drinks, wine, champagne. I think he just wants to smuggle because of this red-neck co-worker's bragging to him. GAD!!!......please tell me why I shouldn't worry......AND if there is a need to freeze or if this is just optional...I know already this sounds stupid.:( Dont worry, if he they get caught, they will take it off him and then you all get on with your vacation. Nothing nasty will happen.:)

If they threw one person off, they would have to throw everyone off who brought a banned item onboard. Treating one person different from the rest would open up a can or worms. Its like someone said, If they threw someone off for smuggling a RR, they would lose a whole lot of revenue from that one person, in what they would spend in the casino, shops, bars etc, just for the sake of one RR. I think most people get away with it, those that dont, they just take them off them, no problem really.:) TBH, I have never used them but would if I needed to. No one had mentioned anything in this thread about being thrown off the ship. That poster (griffy116) was just worried about being "called to the naughty room." The company selling the RR's is probable owned by a cruiseline and those that get found are probably resold to other people ;) I would love to know what happens to all the booze caught. Sequim88 Posted March 2, 2011 #44 Share Posted March 2, 2011 What about the mini bottles u get on airplane? Do those get thru? Funny thing happened to my brother a couple weeks ago. He had put four airplane bottles in his backpack at a port stop. The pack had many little zipper pockets so he put them all over. He took two out and could not find the other two and thought his wife had removed them. So for the rest of the cruise, at all the ports, he took the missing ones off and back on. Never detected. I did similar at one port with three somewhat larger plastic bottles in my backpack. No problem. The one bottle in my pants pocket however was detected (metal cap). I got to keep it anyway because I could not find the naughty table I was supposed to put it on. I can't see too well you know. :D Used Rum Runners for first time. Put them inside the suitcase lining, out of sight. Also avoided any other trigger items that would prompt hand inspection. We still spent over $600 on bar tabs and wine package. Only high horse needing dismounting is RCI attitude to not treat adult passengers as adults, like other lines apparently do. If we could buy a bottle onboard, even at bar price per drink equivalent, -or- if room service drinks were at least sort of prompt we would not even consider bringing our own. ccnwater Posted March 2, 2011 #46 Share Posted March 2, 2011 Sequim88, what ship were you on? Curious if it is just certain ships that are more diligent in searching..... also, did you mean you put the RR in the lining of the checked luggage? SpartyOn813 Posted March 3, 2011 #48 Share Posted March 3, 2011 We are awaiting the arrival of our RR's today. I've read numerous posts on how to pack them etc. I would put wine in one but wonder if it will stay OK throughout the cruise. I've also heard about people getting the bladders from wine boxes through and I'm considering that. Has anyone packed a box of wine and flown with it? I wonder what the pressure would do to it in the luggage. Makes me nervous to do that. I've also read about people getting in lines to check in alcohol at ports and others just walking through security with theirs. How do they get that through? I was thinking of buying the wine box in Miami then putting it in my carryon to take on the ship but wonder if it will be seen on xray and snagged. Any thoughts or experience??? Last, I have purchased a wine package on the ship. All of the previous questions would be null if I can bring an opened bottle back to my cabin. Does anyone know if that's possible or do they just re-cork the wine and you only get it at dinner? Thanks!
ml64 Posted March 3, 2011 #49 Share Posted March 3, 2011 Just got off our cruise. Couldn't find our bags so we we went to the dreaded naughty room :o. There was one of my bags (other 3 were lost on our floor, somewhere--finally found them ourselves). I breathed a sigh of relief when it was tagged "iron" which I knew I didn't bring. After rescanning and having to open up the bag the culprit was our power strip which was checked by staff and given right back to us. My trusty RR was peaking through the clothes but made it onboard unharmed. Just my experience. Looking forward to our next cruise where I can actually bring a bottle of wine to enjoy in my cabin. Wish RCI would change their policy .
Delaware123 Posted March 3, 2011 #50 Share Posted March 3, 2011 Looking to go on my first cruise in a couple of months....do you personally have to walk through a metal detector or an x-ray machine when getting on the boat for the first time? I ask wondering why you don't just put the rumrunner in your pocket or on your person rather than in your luggage?
