Good price for a private tour guide for the day?

Hi all,

 

I have seen on these boards that the way to go is to get a private tour guide at the port and have him drive you to where you want to go during the day and tell you about Cozumel along the way. I read that most guides know area so just go for the best price, so what's a good price? If you have done this, can you post what you paid per person and how many people you had?

Also any suggestions for someone who could handle a group of 6 people. I have seen quite a few posts, and recommendations for a driver for 4 people, but on this trip we are 6?

The taxis are government regulated and at set rates per person depending on where you want to go. We did the city tour the first time we were there we walked around speaking w/several drivers until we found one we were comfortable w/and who spoke good english.

They might be regulated to go to a specific destination and back, but is it different if you're hiring the driver for the day? In another thread someone mentioned looking for the driver offering the best price for the day.
