St. John,NB- 4 day Carnival Glory June 23, 2011

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has been on this cruise.in my experiene on other cruises I have been somewhat disapointed with the overpriced shore excursions. From what I have read, NB seems to be a very friendly place and since we r on a budget, wanted to get some recommendations on where to go and if we can just go it on our own to save some money. Also, is the cruise pretty? It is my gift to my daughter for her sweet 16. We will be spoending 4 extra days in NYC post cruise hence we are on a budget, but really want to realx on the cruise before hectic NYC ;). Thanks for any info you may have and also would like to meet any fellow cruisers for this date.

We are doing the same trip as you on June 5th!

 

I have cruised to St. John twice previously only those trips also included Halifax as ports of call.

 

I set up my own excursions for pretty much any cruise (or any other trip) that we take. It saves money and sometimes you may even end up with a trip more geared to your liking.

 

What I usually do is research any locations chamber of commerce and tourism dept. for things that interest me and links to local businesses. Then I shop local websites and compare pricing so I can see all the options available in that area. From there you can find information and usually even book your excursion online before you go.

 

For example, last trip to Halifax I set up a private car for a city tour and a visit to Peggy's Cove. We had a very informative driver for our tour and it was very enjoyable. He was a local and took pride in his heritage. While in St. John we took the bus to the reversing falls which was very good. The previous trip was a boat tour to Peggy's Cove for a lobster lunch. I think I saved on average $20 pp by booking the same trips myself. Why involve (pay) the cruise line for things I can do myself?

 

I have already researched things to do in St John and we have decided to take a taxi to tour the Moosehead Brewery and then have a lobster lunch at the city market. No need to add any other factor to the expense of it!

 

Just educate yourself on what you'd like to do in a given area and compare it with the excursions organized by the cruise line.

Moosehead breweries no longer offers tours due to safety and security reasons - unless policy recently changed. They do have a "country store" open to the public at the brewery however.

We took a local bus to the reversing falls and walked back. The walk back was not too difficult, mostly downhill but some of the sidewalks were narrow We really enjoyed the bus ride. A man who lives in St. John wanted to practice his English and we had a very enjoyable and informative ride with him.
