sas80 Posted March 27, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2011 Has anyone ever done this? We're going to Progresso in Sept and they have excellent booze prices (we live in Tx). I recall someone saying that all you have to pay is state taxes on the liquor you bring back over and above what your allotment is (in and out of Galveston).....is this true? Anyone have experience with it? Thanks
rvsullivan Posted March 28, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 28, 2011 Texas residents pay Texas tax on all booze you bring back. You pay federal tax on any booze above you allotment. Federal allows you one liter per month.
munchkin4 Posted March 29, 2011 #3 Share Posted March 29, 2011 When we went through customs at Galveston, they barely looked at my Customs Declaration sheet. I declared all alcohol I had purchased ready to pay the tax...but they did not say a word. And I think I had 6 bottles.
geckog Posted March 30, 2011 #4 Share Posted March 30, 2011 Here is the link to the TABC site. http://www.tabc.state.tx.us/poe/how_much_can_i_bring_back.asp You may or may not have any problems bringing more than one liter per person, but be prepared to lose any excess bottles completely. From the TABC FAQ: 4. What happens if I bring in more alcoholic beverages than my allowed limit? Our Taxpayer Compliance Officers are authorized to seize and destroy alcoholic beverages over the importation limits as well as those in the possession of minors or intoxicated persons. Cigarettes in the possession of persons under the age of 18 will also be confiscated and destroyed.
