dc-farer Posted April 7, 2011 Author #83 Share Posted April 7, 2011 Photo of warship -- presumably Royal Navy -- escorting QM2 through the Gulf of Aden (from World Cruise Blog -- http://jryan2011.wordpress.com/) According to the blog: The ship also has onboard a Commander of the Royal Navy – Commander Chris Lade – who will serve as our liaison with the military ships in the area. Commander Lade will stay on the Bridge with Commodore Warner while we are in the Gulf of Aden
Cruachan Posted April 7, 2011 #84 Share Posted April 7, 2011 Photo of warship -- presumably Royal Navy -- escorting QM2 through the Gulf of Aden (from World Cruise Blog -- http://jryan2011.wordpress.com/) Most definitely not Royal Navy - not with a white pennant number. This is a Russian Udaloy class destroyer. The pennant number is hard to make out from the small image on the blog and I'm not confident of my identification. It could, at a pinch, be Vice-Admiral Kulakov (572) which has just returned to service after a long refit but I wouldn't put my shirt on that. Unfortunately, the site from which I made my initial identification had used a picture of Vinogradov to illustrate an article about Kulakov!!! There was a tiny little footnote below the picture in Times New Roman 0.5 point that stated this, but my eyesight wasn't up to the task! J
dc-farer Posted April 20, 2012 Author #89 Share Posted April 20, 2012 So far, I haven't been to St. John's either...but was just glad to make it to NYC that voyage!! Sailed again with Capt. Ed Perrin after our transatlantic -- on the Golden Princess to Hawaii later that same year -- and we lost all power for a few hours off of Kauai. Told him that he was my bad luck Captain and that I wouldn't sail with him again. But, lo and behold, he turned up as Captain on the Star Princess in 2009 when I sailed from Sydney to L.A. All went well on that cruise...except that my cabin steward had to be flown home to the Philippines mid-voyage because of a torn rotator cuff and a lady who I'd become good friends with on the ship broke her toe! Just a thought but is it maybe you yourself who is the Jonah?!! Maybe Capn Perrin checks the passenger list with dread scanning for your name....... I rest my case. He's definitely the one with the bad luck. Here's a story about his latest misadventure: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/apr/20/carnival-cruise-ship-captain-fishermen
Nippy Sweetie Posted April 21, 2012 #90 Share Posted April 21, 2012 Oh dear. What an awful thing to happen. Those poor men must have been so happy to see the ship then their hearts must have sunk to see it sail on. Tragic

Cats2010 Posted June 21, 2012 #92 Share Posted June 21, 2012 According to a World Cruise blog (http://jryan2011.wordpress.com/), Commodore Warner made the following announcement today just before the QM2 left Cochin (a written copy of the announcement was subsequently delivered to each stateroom): COCHIN 30th March Dear Guest Between the 30th March and the 6th April, from Cochin to Dubai and onto the Suez canal, we will be transiting an area well documented in the world’s media for piracy, in particular the Gulf of Aden, which we will transit on the 5th and 6th April. Onboard Queen Mary 2, we have put in place a security plan in order to protect the ship. As part of this plan, I would like to request your assistance and cooperation with the following: Deck 7 external promenade deck and Deck 6 aft will be closed on both sides at night and no Guests or crew will be allowed access for the duration of the transit. During hours of darkness, only essential open deck lights will be on as it is important to reduce the ship’s external lighting. With this in mind I request that you turn off your cabin lights when not required and close the curtains of your window or balcony. In order to familiarize you with these additional measures prior to transiting the Gulf Of Aden, there will be a Guest and Crew drill at 10.30 on the morning of Monday 4th April. This Drill will be conducted in the interests of your personal safety and security and I respectfully request your full participation in this important exercise. In the event of pirate activity, announcements will be made from the Bridge and the initial actions required by our guests will be as follows: Guests are to proceed to their staterooms Guests with a window or balcony should proceed to the corridor outside their stateroom and sit on either a chair or on the floor and close their stateroom door. If you are in an inboard stateroom please remain inside your stateroom. Your Stateroom Steward will do a check of their section area to ensure everyone is accounted for. During this time Guests are not to remain on any open decks or near any external windows. I must emphasise that the safety and the security of every individual on board is my highest priority and the implementation of this procedure is an important part of the ship’s security plan. Signed by Commodore Bernard Warner Master RMS Queen Mary 2 OMG, dc-farer, do you seriously believe these pirates would attack a ship like QM2? She is too high, to big, too long and by far too sophisticated for them! In addition, the staff is well trained to defend such attacks. The precautions the Commodore took were of course perfectly justified and this is what one would expect in such a situation. What is the use of publishing this note now that the cruise is over?
