Texting ability

Does anyone know how well cell phones work while out at sea? I want my kids to have the ability to text should they have a problem. I know the cost is $.50 per outgoing message.

Should be fine, I got a text a couple years ago while crusing the meditteranean the cost was reasonable but we didn't text except a few times.

I found texts didn't work to well, both sending and receiving in the Caribbean last September. Normally had to wait till in port.

Bummer. I know walkie talkies aren't the best and I heard about phones you can rent but also heard they probably weren't available. Oh well.

We used our Verizon phones for texting and they worked the same as on land.
