splendor 2 days in Cabo

We are booked on the Splendor for the May 1st cruise. I got my e-mail last week telling me we will be in Cabo on Tue and Wed but the new Itinerary lists the hours on both days as early in the morning until early in the evening. Does anyone know if this is the hours that the tenders are running and what happens if we decide to stay in Cabo late at night to enjoy the night life. I am just wondering if staying overnight in Cabo at one of their hotels will be an option if the tenders do stop early. Has anyone been on the Splendor recently and expeienced the overnight in Cabo.

I'm on the May 8th Splendor sailing and I checked on this as well. I was told that you could stay overnight in Cabo, but if for some reason the tenders were unable to operate the next morning (for example, due to weather), you would be stuck off the ship and responsible for your own travel to catch up with it. A bit of a risk, I think.

We would not be staying in Cabo the second night just maybe on tuesday and since the tenders should be able to run at least once on our 2nd full day there I do not think it would be too big of a risk.

I love the idea of "overnighting" it in Cabo and I'm definitley looking forward to having two full days there which has been kind of a pleasant change even though I will miss Mazatlan. However, I have read before about people who got off the ship and couldn't get back on the next day because the tendors weren't running due to weather or heavy seas. I wouldn't chance it. The ship won't even really overnight in Cabo, she'll sail out for the night so they can open the casino and shops. IMO it's not worth the risk but to each their own.

I had been looking at getting a hotel for the overnight we have in July but had not thought about "What if they didnt return with the tenders the next day" senario. Guess I am going to ditch that idea, just not worth the risk.

i don't know where the cruise ship will be tendered at, but a cabo must is going to the office on medano beach over looking lands end. good food and nothing like drinking a beer on the beach with your feet in the sand.

I don't think the ship waits around all day for the weather to clear up, if the weather is bad in the morning then I think they would just continue on their way~ so I wouldn't risk staying late in Cabo but that's just me~

I agree with Allie....You can't make that assumption that they should be able to go at least once. That would be a very expensive assumption if it doesn't work out on your behalf. ;) Just enjoy your full day, on both days...plenty of nightlife on the ship for you to enjoy also. Have fun!!

ok so I take by the responses that I have gotten that this new itinerary of being in Cabo for 2 days is real new to all of us. This will be our third trip down the Mexican riviera although the last 2 times we were on the Pride and made all of our scheduled stops.

I can not imagine that on our second day in this port that there will be no tenders at all. I think that with the changed itinerary Carnival will be offering shore excursions for both days which of course means tenders on both days

We attended a wedding in Cabo about 10 years ago and know there are some nice hotels to stay in, I was looking for an answer about who I would need to inform on the ship if we decided to stay onshore for the evening and if anyone else has done the overnight thing.

again I say maybe this is too new for anyone to have tried and if we do decide to go with this option I will let you all know how it worked out for us

Here's a press release on the Cruise Critic site about the two-day Cabo stay:

http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=3169

The pertinent quote from the article:

"Travelers excited about experiencing the Mexican nightlife in this Riviera resort town may be disappointed to learn that the ship will depart at 6 p.m. on the first day spent in Cabo and return at 7 a.m. on the second day. Passengers will not be allowed to overnight in port because Cabo is a tender port, and bad weather could prevent the ship from running tenders on the second day, effectively stranding any overnighters."

Unfortunately, it sounds like they're not permitting passengers the option of overnight stays in Cabo.

If the weather does not permit tendering it doesn't matter if Carnival has offered excursions. If it's too rough, it's simply too rough. Carnival would rather refund excursion money than risk having passengers injured attempting to tender in bad weather. And as a previous poster said, the ship probably won't wait around just to run a couple tenders IF the weather clears later in the day.

Two days in Cabo is not new. I believe it's been part of the five day Spirit itinerary for some time.

 Good luck on this one guys. We sailed this route 3/27/11 and were dissapointed. We too were promised two days at Cabo and all we got was a supposed extended stay single day (we still left prior to sunset). Yes, we returned to Long Beach the first night due to an ill passenger but why did that cost us a second day at Cabo?

What was orginally booked as a three stop cruise ended up as a two stop cruise. I am dissapointed to say the least.

On the positive side, I have never tipped as much on any cruise as I did on this one. For a new crew (remember, the Splendor relaunched 2/20/11) to be this good and outshine experienced crews that have been together for months was fantastic.

None of the old crew is on the ship?

You do understand the ship goes back out to sea, right? It does not stay in port overnight.

All it would take would be rough seas or high winds for them to possibly cancel the port. In my mind it just isn't worth the risk to stay on shore overnight.

You don't seem to understand the process. On the first day, if the captain thinks it is safe, the tenders will run. At the end of the day the ship will then head out to sea. If on day two the the captain does not think it is safe, no tenders will run. The ship will not wait around for better weather. It will simply head to PV at a reduced speed - and you will still be in Cabo.

My wife & I will be on Splendor 6/26. Is there a reason why Carnival decided to tender 2 days at Caba vs. docking for 2 days at PV? I have never been to the Mexican Rivera but from what I have read and learned there isn’t that much difference in either port as far as shore excursions. What is the big deal with Caba that would warrant the tendering issues?

We returned home from Carnival Splendor just last night. What a wonderful cruise!

To answer your question, we were in Cabo from 9:30 to 6:00 on the first day, with the last tender at 5:00. On the second day, we were there from 7:00 to 4:00, and the last tender was at 3:00. I don't know if anyone can stay over night on purpose, but we did talk to a guy who "missed" the last tender on the first day. He and his buddy went to an internet cafe and booked the Westin Hotel for $66.00. I guess he was lucky that we had nice weather and the ship came back for its second day.

Cabo has 5 anchor spots for ships.

**********

On our Spirit cruise there was at least one group that stayed overnight in Cabo. If the ship wasn't able to return to Cabo then they would have been on their own to get to the next port (La Paz) or back to Long Beach.

Bring enough money, credit cards and your passport JIC.

On our second day the seas were rougher and tendering was put on hold for an hour or so.

  • 3 weeks later...

If there is one thing I have learned about travel, it is not to assume anything.

I wouldn't chance it. Not to mention you have already paid for your overnight accommodation, as well as meals and entertainment. Why would you want to pay again?

Just get off early on the 2nd day and enjoy yourself.

Docking in ports are reserved well in advance and fees already paid.

Other ships will be scheduled in PV at other times. It is easier in Cabo because you don't dock. You also never know what deals a cruise line has with what companies in a given port.
