HKG Posted April 21, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 21, 2011 We are sailing on the Pride of America in the fall and would like to hear abour your experience with Shore Excursions. What is worth the money and what is not. What if any should we book through NCL. Thanks I did not join any shore excursions thru NCL, because the cost was very high, instead try to look at Robert's Hawaii tour company, they're the biggest tour company in Hawaii and they do tour at all the port that Pride of America Dock at almost half of the price, Also they pick you up at the port like NCL does. Hope this help.
Rare mcmomny Posted April 21, 2011 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2011 we booked the road to Hana on our own and Smith's luau, both much cheaper then using NCL We valso had a helicopter tour scheduled on our own but the weather was bad so it was canceled For the rest we booked our own car, really enjoyed the freedom of going where we wanted when we wanted
taymiss2 Posted April 21, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 21, 2011 We rented a car in each port and did it on our own. So much fun, easy and cheaper. We could stay as long or as little as we wanted in each place. Easy to get around Hawaii. Below is a link to drive guides that we followed. We would not have been able to hike to the big Pipiwai trail if we had been on a tour bus when we drove to Hana. That was not to be missed if you like to hike. I was very organized and knew where we were going and how to get there each day. We wasted no time and fit in a ton of stuff. http://www.alternative-hawaii.com/drives/bigisle/volcano.htm
spacepotatoes Posted April 21, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 21, 2011 We did three excursions with NCL on the POA. On Maui, we booked the Road to Hana. If we had to do it over again, I probably wouldn't book it through NCL. I didn't really feel we got our money's worth and we didn't see as much as we'd expected. In all fairness, it wasn't entirely NCL's fault. However, they should have told us upfront what the situation was so that we could decide whether to stick with the tour or not. The route that they normally take was covered by a rock slide and was closed for most of the day to clean it up. As a result, they ran that tour backwards. This caused a problem, though, because the tour started really early in the morning so none of the stops on that back side were actually open. We just had to drive right by. The place where we stopped to see the seven pools (or seven sisters? can't remember now) was partially being renovated so we couldn't get too far. There was really nothing to see there. The one park we went to with a black sand beach and a lava tube was nice, though. And the place where we stopped for lunch in Hana was also good. In Hilo, we did the Volcanos National Park & Rainbow Falls tour. That was great, worth the money. In Kona, we did the beach blast. That was a very nice day, only thing we didn't like was that lunch wasn't included the things they were selling were not very good. Microwaved burgers in plastic wrap are not my idea of a good meal! Otherwise, we enjoyed that excursion and it was nice to have a relaxing day on such a port-intensive cruise.
