Jayhawk Posted April 28, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2011 Anyone been to this church or could give me directions to it (and/or transportation alternatives) from the Genoa port? Thinking of visiting it (which includes a glass enclosure of St. Catherina of Genoa) on an upcoming cruise. Is it worth the visit? Having a hard time finding much, at least in English, on the internet. Thanks in advance!
euro cruiser Posted April 28, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2011 I can't vouch for the accurateness of the information, but here is a site in English that gives you opening hours: http://www.nileguide.com/destination/genoa-italy-120/things-to-do/chiesa-della-ss-annunziata-di-portoria-s-caterina-di-portoria/802950
Jayhawk Posted April 30, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted April 30, 2011 Thanks Euro cruiser. I had actually found that paragraph, but it's the only one I've seen. I appeciate you looking it up :) . I wish I could find someone that had been there, tells me it's worth it and gives me directions from the dock.
euro cruiser Posted April 30, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 30, 2011 I can't speak to whether it's worth it, but I can tell you how to get there. You could walk the entire way, it's only about a mile and a quarter from the port (assuming you are docked at the cruise port, as we were). Or you could take the metro. The Principe station is only steps from the cruise port. The De Ferrari stop is less than half a mile from the church. You can see the metro map here: http://www.metrogenova.com/percorsoestazioni.html
Jayhawk Posted May 2, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted May 2, 2011 Thank you Euro Cruiser! Seems easy enough to get to even if it's not worth it. :)
euro cruiser Posted May 2, 2011 #6 Share Posted May 2, 2011 I was very impressed with Genova and look forward to spending more time there. For us it was the next-to-last stop on a packed Med cruise and I hadn't done any research at all, so I went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. We are travelling up from 5Terre to join the Mariner and after we board will have 3-4 hours to wander. EuroCruiser do you have any recommendations? Not looking for museum or aquarium; we have 2 kids in tow 12 & 9 to add to the fun. Any cafe recommendations? gelato? Just looking for low key. Jayhawk Posted May 4, 2011 Author #8 Share Posted May 4, 2011 Yes, would love other ideas. This follows three packed days including a very long one in Rome. Trying to think of something easy and close, possibly take the kids for just a few hours. Even thinking we might leave them in kids club to play while we walk the town and visit the church or a couple other little things. By the way, you said easily walkable, what street do we go down, or just get off and ask for directions from locals?
euro cruiser Posted May 4, 2011 #9 Share Posted May 4, 2011 Well, this may not be how you want to spend your time but one of the most popular sites in Genoa (for Italians, anyway) is the aquarium, right at the port. We wandered and happened into a wedding at the town hall, among other things. It was a Sunday morning and the city was still half asleep, a very special time to be there. The city has an excellent tourism web site with a lot of information in English that might give you some ideas: http://www.genova-turismo.it/spip.php?rubrique60
