Can anyone advise of the best way to do the trip to Rome, we are going on the Thomson Dream in August and wondered how much freetime you get if you do the Rome all in one day trip. Is there any benefit to doing the rome express all in one day rather than the coach. We want to see the most whilst on the trip and would appreciate any advice

there is a train thats quicker and the terminal is in the centre of rome if you are confident enough to do it totally on your own - do some research before you go and print off some maps, and make sure you are not late back for the ship or it will sail without you!!

If you want to do your own thing then dont do the ships guided 'bus' tours - lots of time on the bus driving past many of the sights!! The walking tour of Rome one seemed to get good reviews from some passengers though.

Im a bit nervous of going that far on my own so we did the ships 'rome on your own' tour and it was very good, it drops you in st peters square with a map and some info and collects you there later at a prearranged time. We hopped on a bus to the colosseum, did that first then walked a route back across the city taking in lots of the 'wow' sights on the way, it worked for us. The vatican needs a full day - you might if you are lucky manage to see st peters if you get back to the square about an hour before the meeting time but the queues even in the late afternoon were very long. You can book and print colosseum tickets before you leave if you want to save time. The colloseum ticket is also valid for entry to the forum and capitol.

There is also a HOHO bus that goes round all the main sights all day long and is quite good value, and means you can always get back to st peters easily from wherever you are!

Hi to you.

My wife and I caught the train to Rome from Cittivettia, or whatever its called, saw all the sights we wanted to see and got back on the ship before most of the organised tours arrived back. I think in a day you can do either the Vatican or the other sights like the Spainish Steps Etc but not both. The train is cheap, about 12 Euros return and drops you right in the centre of Rome. To find the Station in Cittivettia, turn right out of the port gate and walk about 800 yards down the road. There wil be loads of passengers doing this just follow them. Don't forget to validate your ticket on the platforn before you board the train. Easy to do on the yellow machines. Don't let the ship board trip organisers put you off. Most of thier tripswill be for 8 hours, some up to 12 hours so plenty of time to get back before the ship sails. Hisco
