44minimum Posted May 13, 2011 #1 Share Posted May 13, 2011 I'll be going on my first cruise ever in the spring of 2012 on the Mariner Of The Seas to the Western Caribbean, Cozumel, Belize and Roatan. I'm in an electric wheelchair full time, cannot get out of it and walk a few steps and I understand that in Cozumel and Roatan the ship will pull right up next to the dock and I can just drive my chair down the plank onto the dock and go have fun. At Belize there is a tender involved and I will just stay aboard the ship that day. How wheelchair accessible is Cozumel and Roatan? Will I have trouble finding a minivan or full size van taxi with a lift to get around? I would like to go of some kind of shore excursion if I can find some that will accommodate me. kitty9 Posted May 13, 2011 #2 Share Posted May 13, 2011 You will have to check into booking a private van for your needs. Unfortunately, there are not many available especially in Roatan. Just Google "accessible vans in Cozumel" and you'll see some options. Also, right off the dock in Cozumel, there are bars, restaurants and shops right there. I use a mobility scooter and we usually stay right there and enjoy the area. There is a board here on Cruise Critic that's specifically for those of us with disabilities. Come on over, we're a font of information.
Colorado Kat Posted May 14, 2011 #3 Share Posted May 14, 2011 It's not going to be easy to get around in Roatan or Cozumel with a wheelchair. Try your best to find an accessible van before you go, or you might be stuck with the immediate dock area. Check with your ship line before you go. I remember some steps involved in getting off the ramp certain places.
