Getting around the island

Is there reliable public transportation like buses or ferries? We will have a 15-month-old with us when we go next year, and no carseat. We don't wanna go on any tours, as we are trying to keep cost to a minimum. Any suggestions? Also, what is there to do right off the ship within walking distance? Thanks!

Just push the little one in a stroller and walk to town. It isn't too far, and there is a beach by Phillipsburg. Lots of shops, and places to eat, no problem. Have fun, and enjoy!

No tours and keep costs to a minimum.

 

I'd suggest that you just hang out on Great Bay Beach. You could walk, but the water taxi from the cruise pier will drop you near the center of the action. It's $5 per person and it's good for travel all day.

There is some of the best shopping in the Caribbean along Front Street, just a block from the beach, and all up and down this area of Philipsburg are plenty of places for food and drink, renting beach chairs, etc. You could also just take towels from the ship and sit on the beach.

 

There is also some shopping right at the cruise pier. They have maybe a dozen shops and stalls available, but it's much better shopping downtown.
