No more Smoking inside/outside cabins....balconies only (except for spa)
As a non-smoker, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. On another post, I read someone saying they can't wait to get on their cabin and watch thier smoke drift to other balconies (implying they're now looking forward to disturbing people who don't smoke).

I grew up in with parents who smoked...in the car...with the windows up. As a result, I'm pretty sensitve to it now.

I was hoping on my upcoming cruise, I would be able to work out some sort of a compromise if I were near it - unfortunately from what it appears, it's all-out war between the smokers and non so that may be out of the question.

Unfortunately, if you're a non-smoker and down-wind, you lose.
Not every smoker "looks forward" to that...in fact, many of us actively try to avoid it. It's even made me a little neurotic. And even though somebody has been nasty to us in the past (only that one awful man), we would still try to work something out with our neighbors.

What I've found over the last few years is that it's easy to say "screw 'em" (smokers or nonsmokers, take your pick) on an internet board. It's harder to do that in person when you're just on vacation, you've just met somebody and you think they're nice and you're looking forward to a shared experience. You don't want to ruin your new friends' vacation and they usually don't want to infringe too much on you either. I think compromises will still work for the most part, although there will be one or two here or there who say "absolutely no smoking on the balcony next to mine" or "it's within the rules to smoke out there so I'll smoke whenever I want no matter how much it bothers you." We just have to get past those extremes.
In my experience, it's only a war on these boards. In reality, people I've met on Carnival cruises are very courteous.
This is reality. I am married to a considerate smoker......and he doesn't whine about others perfumes either......such childish nonsense on these boards.......pathetic IMO.....

Well, I'm glad Carnival is restricting where folks are allowed to smoke. That's nice for us non-smokers, especially those of us who instantly get a sinus infection from it :(

But I have to say, as a balcony loving cruiser, this is awful news! We love, love, love to spend a lot of time out on our balcony and probably won't so much anymore. In fact, we may not book balconies anymore.

But a bigger question is this: Will this change increase the potential for on-board fires from smokers throwing their butts overboard?

married to a former smoker(quit 2005), I can see both sides of this issue. Smoke bothers me now, but if an area is legal for smokers, ie balcony, bars, etc. I think it is my responsibility to avoid the smoke. When the smoking venues on Carnival start to lose money, they will ban smoking. We have a balcony booked in a little over 2 weeks. I can't figure out how someone smoking on a balcony outside will bother me. Guess I will find out soon if I am beside a smoker.

As an aside, my first cousin & best friend who is 65, was diagnosed with stage 3A lung cancer yesterday. Has smoked for 40 years. Laid the cigarettes down 2 months ago when she got a bad CT scan. This is a free country (for now). We make our own decisions and suffer our own consequences.

Carnival is changing policy as a result of feedback from customers. The majority doesn't smoke and don't like second hand smoke. It is a decision made about money, not about health. The more non-smokers complain, the more restrictions will be placed on smokers. This has happened in VA. No smoking inside restaurants unless there are 2 separate areas with separate ventilation. Most just went non-smoking. I haven't seen any close because of lack of smoking customers.

I am glad there will be less smoking inside, but I also feel for the smokers because I know what it is like to be a smoker and not be able to smoke when I wanted to. One of the reasons I quit.

I wish it wasn't an us against them kind of thing. Guess that would be wishful thinking.

First of all, congratulations. :)
Second, I agree 100% with that statement. Smokers are pretty restricted, so I feel it is my responsibility to remove myself from the smoke and this includes my balcony.....Yeah, it does not make me happy to leave my balcony because we DO use it, but smoking is allowed out there and as long as it is, I will have to be the one that removes myself from it.

Why would they all of a sudden start throwing them overboard? They do give you ashtrays for your balcony, same as they always have.
Not a real big deal to me, we never smoked in the cabin anyways. Glad they left the balcony alone.
We never smoke in the cabin either. Just cancelled a Princess 10-Day Caribbean for next Feb. They didn't leave the balcony alone...

:) Good news! Received the email from Carnival notifying us of the change in smoking restrictions for our Feb 2012 cruise on the Dream. I'd be happy with a smoke free cruise. I hope the smoking area in the casino is a tiny corner. :)
I'm a smoker and I'm not being driven out of my gord.

As long as I can smoke on the balcony I pay for, I'm good. Maybe that will give me more reason to sit out there and enjoy watching the ocean. :p
same here. i like a good cigar and the new smoking policy is no big deal. i guess i will have to spend more time smoking on my balcony.

i won't be sailing with carnival anymore. fortunatly, i've been to all the world's major ports - cruising is strictly optional anymore.

i called carnival and had myself removed from the mailing list, and told them why. i suggest other smokers do the same.

i even made my album of carnival liberty on webshots private because of this - it has had over 127,000 hits. no more free advertising for CCL.

If only the smoke on the smokers balcony wouldn't go directly in my face while I am on my balcony.

I don't have anything against smokers at all. My Mom smoked all her life and it ended up taking her life. Smokers are just people, but the smoke makes some of us physically ill and I hope I don't end up without a balcony to go on that isn't sending smoke to me because that's the only way they can smoke!:eek:

That's putting your money where your mouth is!! No whining, just action!!

Cruising is my addiction. I can't imagine anything preventing me from cruising, so I understand your giving it up because of your smoking addiction.... Just take into consideration as far as vacations go, that a lot of hotels are non smoking too....You may want to think about this a little longer you know, because this may be a case of acting before thinking things through. There aren't many places that you can smoke. Unless you want to stay in your house, you might have to suck this up.

I agree that with the current changes it may seem a bit extreme or short-sighted to give up cruising because of the smoking issue; however, if Carnival changes the policy again to make the ships completely non-smoking (which is not too far-fetched, given the changes that have happened thus far) then it makes more sense to give up cruising.

At a hotel you can take the elevator down and go outside to smoke, but on non-smoking ship you won't have that option.
All this will do is cause the folks who "have to" have a smoke all the time, to have to purchase a balcony cabin.

Which in turn will reduce the number of balconies available for non-smokers.

Which in turn will cause there to be more smoke filtering across the balconies, onto neighboring balconies.
Which will just ruin the non-smokers balcony experience more.

Doesn't affect me, as I only smoked sticks in the cigar bar or on the deck in a deck chair. (or on a sporadic balcony cruise. 2 out 10 so far)
I would never think of smoking in our inside cabin and have never smoked in a bar other than Sports or Cigar bar.

So no loss to me as a cigar smoker.

Just a loss to balcony loving, non-smokers in my opinion.

Great for interior/ocean view cabin loving non-smokers and bar frequenting non-smokers.

Bill
That about says it. Bye bye interiors, hello balconies:rolleyes:

Isn't that jumping the gun??

It's a knee-jerk reaction because he's pissed. It wasn't well thought out.
No mass market line is ever going to be smoke-free, fleet wide...at least not in our lifetime.
That's nonsense.

This smoking habit is costing you more every day isn't it???

I haven't read the press release myself, but others are saying that Princess is becoming completely non-smoking (including balconies). If that rumor is true, then it isn't so incredible to believe that Carnival will do the same in the not-too-distant future.

Beginning Jan 15 2012 no smoking in cabins or balconies on Princess. They will still have designated areas inside and out.

I was a smoker for 35 years. Nine months ago I quit smoking using a Personal Vaporizer [also known as an E-cigg] I didn't smoke in the cabin and was considerate to non smokers. I love my P.V. and now I am a non smoker and smoke don't bother me either.

Didn't say they would, just wondering if it might increase the potential is all. Didn't know ashtrays were on smoking balconies. Ours never had ashtrays. But we don't smoke, either.

Me, too!! We never go into the casino because we can't breath in there!

Ditto!:D

The biggest problem with smoke is that it is tough to "contain." It tends to go everywhere unless you have an extra-super-duper-strength suction vacuum to take it elsewhere.

My "smoker" horror story is this: We were on a Carnival cruise and I was out by the pool on the non-smoking side, enjoying the sunshine and watching the people play. Sipping DODs and just having a wonderful time. A 'youngish' fellow from the other side of the ship got up from his lounge chair, came to the non-smoking side, lit up a cigerette and smoked it, blowing it into people's faces intentionally. He was a real a$$h0le, as you can imagine.

I know not all smokers are like that, and I'm thankful for the ones who try to be accomodating to those around them. :)
