Thomson Destiny - port info

Recommended Posts

Off on 28th July 2 wk cruise Mediterreanean Renaissance and Jewels of the Med. Family of 6 so can't wait

Visiting Villefranche, Florence/Pisa, Olbia, Rome, Corsica, Toulon, Barcelona and a few others.

Happy to do some organised trips - did Rome by train before. this was fine but would appreciate any advice on what trips you can do on your own or any hints on places to visit.

Does anyone know if ship docks in centre of Barcelona or quite a way out.

Can you get a train along the coast in Villafranche?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry to highjack your thread Jerseygirl, we're on Destiny from the 28th for one week, we want to do Rome by train, we're travelling as a family of 4 so it's going to cost a lot of money nearly £500, is it worth the extra and is lunch included in that excursion, any info gratefully recieved.

Hi Midland Cruiser

We did Rome by train a couple of years ago while on the Thomsons Celebration. It was really easy. The station is about a 5 min walk once you get out the port gates and the fares at the time were only about 5 euros each return. It took about 45 mins ane there were 2 suitable stops, 1 in the centre of Rome and one at the Vatican.

As long as you leave yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship (just got tickets yesterday so dock in Rome at 8am and do not leave until 7pm) there shouldn't be a problem.

Not sure what fares and train times are now but shuld be easy enough to find out. It will be much cheaper than doing an organised tour.

Hope this helps. I am hoping other members will be able to offer similar advice about the opther ports.

The train station at Villefranche is about 5/10 minutes walk from the point where the tender drops you off.

After leaving the drop off point turn right and walk along the sea front - the station is slightly uphill just before you reach the beach area. Not sure what times the trains run as we didn't use them but seemed to be quite a few leaving the station at various times.
