We were there in Aug last year for a week. It was a nice place, good service, great drinks but the beach is not worth going there for a day. It's cloudy and brown. We had to walk a hundred yards or more to the North I believe to the next resort over to get to clear water. We couldn't even snorkle at the Melia. I wouldn't do it.

Unfortunately the pier at El Cozumeleno backs the seaweed up in front of the Melia. We have been there several times on a day pass and every time the water in front was brown so we sat at the pool all the time. We found the food just so-so on the buffet. The drinks and service were fine. We had a much better time at Mr. Sanchos with a beautiful white sand beach and crystal clear water.

I recently emailed El Cozumeleno and they also offer day passes. I think they were $60 or $65 for adults. I have read on Cheapcaribbean.com that there is great snorkeling here.
