Live the good life Posted March 22, 2005 #1 Share Posted March 22, 2005 For Stockholm, planning to take a combination of 2 ship tours (an Old Town walking tour/ice bar and a Waterways of stockholm canal tour); However, even the 2 tours will not cover all the sites our daughter would be interested in seeing! Due to the short time available between the 2 ship tours (one hour and a half), we therefore plan to take a taxi to the Vasa Museum and Royal palace and back to ship for this port. For Copenhagen, our ship will not dock until noon and will leave at 01:00 a.m. the same day. Although we will be taking the 4 hour "Walk and Cruise tour", this will not cover the Royal Palace and therefore we will have to take a taxi to the Amalienborg Royal Palace and back to ship. We will also have to use taxi to go to the Tivoli garden (Our ship will only have a transfer to Tivoli at 05:00 p.m., but we won't be able to use this transfer since our ship tour will not end until 06:15 p.m.) Questions: 1) How easy would it be to get a taxi from the ports for Stockholm and Copenhagen? 2) How easy would it be to get a taxi from Tivoli back to the ship at 10:30 p.m.-11:30 p.m. at night? (Our ship will be departing at 01:00 a.m.) 3) Has anybody taken a taxi to Vasa Museum rather than using the ferry (to make use of the short amount of time in port)? Thanks, Kim
Call me Ishmael Posted March 22, 2005 #2 Share Posted March 22, 2005 As to Stockholm, your plan might be overly ambitious. The Stockholm ports website shows the Constellation docking at Frihamnen 638 which I understand to be about a 15 minute cab drive to town. If so, you will have 30 minutes of roundtrip cabbing and 1 hour for two sights which will also necessitate transportation to go from to the other. You might want to skip the trip back to the ship and spend half a day on your Vasa & Palace itinerary. If you take the ferry, you'll have your boat ride as well. dileep Posted March 22, 2005 #3 Share Posted March 22, 2005 Is there a single place where one can see where the Celebrity Constellation docks? I am interested in seeing what ports are within walking distance of something interesting vs a 15 minute cab ride.
aztex Posted March 22, 2005 #4 Share Posted March 22, 2005 I don't know if there is a single place for all the Baltic Ports, but each city has a Port web site that can be found on Google. It takes a little bit of hunting but you can usually find the pier that will be used for docking and information on location. This is the site for Stockholm http://www.stoports.com/ Click on Vessel Calls; Stockholm; Expected Cruise Vessels and then view. The list shows date, ship, pier, etc. Go back to Home and click on Our Ports to determine location, etc. Kim, let me preface this with the fact that we have not yet been to Stockholm but we have been dealing with a company that does walking tours there and she has given us quite a bit of information. If you do Gamla Stan on your own, which many people do, you can then take the ferry to Djurgarden (about 5 minutes) and walk to the Vasa Museum in about 15 minutes. If you are docking at Freihamnen (Freeport), you will be on the right side of town for the return trip by taxi. Perhaps the canal trip could be built in from either Gamla Stan or Djurgarden. You can also pre-order taxis to meet you at a specific time and place, to be sure you get back to the ship on time. We also have a very limited schedule in Stockholm and are using a local guide as a result - so we can maximize our time on site. Wish you the best in making your decisions and know you will have a great time.
John&Betty Posted March 22, 2005 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2005 Hello, I have done a lot of research on just that topic. We want to do our own walking/public transportation tours in most of the ports on the May 7th Constellation cruise this year. There is also a page on getting to Tivoli and back in the evening. http://home.mchsi.com/~jbglenn33/ John
eileen & jay Posted March 23, 2005 #6 Share Posted March 23, 2005 John & Betty: You guys are absolutely, without a doubt, fanastic with your pre-planning/web site. Again, thank you for sharing your organized research on your upcoming cruise. Jay & I will be on the July 2nd Constellation sailing.
Princess Di Posted March 23, 2005 #7 Share Posted March 23, 2005 GIL (AZTEX): We are on the Star Princess, sailing from CPH on 2 September. I am also interested in touring in Stockholm. ;) Would you please e-mail me? Thank you very much. :D
swdke Posted March 23, 2005 #8 Share Posted March 23, 2005 Copenhagen is an old city, but with plenty of modern conveniences. You will have to difficulty finding a taxi. Danish taxis take credit cards and no tip is required. At Tivoli you will have no difficulty finding a taxi. There is a taxi stand in front of Tivoli, and around the corner, next to the City's main train station. Enjoy Tivoli and have fun.
CA traveler Posted March 24, 2005 #9 Share Posted March 24, 2005 I am also interested in the Stockholm walking tour contact. Since we are on Princess, I know we dock an hour away from the city so our valuable time is reduced by 2 hours. Any information would be helpful. Thanks These new rules are pretty silly. email at s11berg@pacbell.net
Live the good life Posted March 24, 2005 Author #10 Share Posted March 24, 2005 Happy Birthday to John and Betty!!! We printed out your research materials to bring with us on our trip. We have just purchased a DK book for each port (great color photos for souvenirs), and a Frommer's Scandinavian guide (great infos)... Thank you all for your input/inquiries/insights, etc...The main reason we are not doing the ports on our own this time (by using hop on hop off buses) is because we feel our teenage daughter would greatly benefit from a culture and history lesson from a licenced tour guide; Besides, we would like to maximize the use of the very limited time in Stockholm and Copenhagen. We are still looking and planning for a private tour in Stockholm to be able to visit all pertinent sites... And, for Copenhagen, we feel so much better about the taxi's availability..After the ship docks at noon, we will use the first 1.5-2.0 hrs to visit inside one of the Royal palaces and Round tower. We will then return to ship to take the ship's "Walk and Cruise Tour", which should be comprehensive, but will only pass by the royal palaces and Round tower! We will do Helsinki on our own in the morning, and a ship's canal tour in the afternoon. For Oslo, we will try to take a cab to the Royal Palace before returning to ship to take a ship walk/canal tour combination (since our ship will not dock until 02:30 p.m.!) So, please keep on posting on the availability of taxis at all ports and any other helpful tips... Thanks, Kim

mikenmar Posted March 25, 2005 #12 Share Posted March 25, 2005 John Are the port dockings you posted for all the Constellation cruise dates? We will be on the Aug 13th cruise that is a little different than yours. Thank you. Marion
DiamondJim Posted March 26, 2005 #13 Share Posted March 26, 2005 Dear John & Betty Thank you so much for all the work you did in regards to the ports of call for the May 7 trip. We printed out your itinerary and will use all of your helpful hints and suggestions. You sure have made our trip interesting already just reading all of your material and also from all of the other people who given suggestions. Did have one question how does one take care of the money in each port as they all have their own currency? Is it a good idea to have some of the currency for each port ahead of time? Thanks for you information DiamondJim
