Baltic Cruise - summer or fall??

Recommended Posts

Benjamin - the weather in Scandinavia is often very nice in August, even in September. This year they've had an unusually warm summer, mid 70s to lower 80s.

I grew up in Scandinavia but have only done one cruise there, early August of 2002, and it was in the low 80s with lots of humidity. Of course it could be cooler this year, but you won't need your fall clothing. Bring a jacket such as a windbreaker or hooded sweatshirt, possibly also a waterproof jacket, maybe a sweater or two (lightweight cotton, not wool) and a hat or a cap. You should be able to wear shorts on most days, but bring a pair or two of long pants for excursions, windy days etc.

What's your itinerary like? It may be a little early to see the beautiful fall colors, which don't show until September, but this is prime time for wild berries, so look for such rare ones as cloudberries and arctic brambleberries. Delicious - hope you get to try them!:)

Thanks so much for the info! Helps alot because I just wasn't sure where to begin and still "pack light" (per my husband:) We are spending week before the Cruise in Brussels & Amsterdam. Our Cruise Itinerary is great...leave from Copenhagen to Oslo (yes, hopefully Oslo), Aarhus, Berlin, Estonia, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stolkholm and back to Copenhagen. Should be wonderful!

Pack like you would for summer in Alaska. We were there in June (summer solstice) and FROZE!!! We ended up wearing every layer we brought! Especially, bring a waterproof outer shell with a layer of fleece to go under.

This just goes to show how the weather really could be ANYTHING in June. This year June was very warm, as was July. In the 70s to low 80s, but with rain showers and thunder at times.

Keep in mind that when it's that warm in Scandinavia it's also very humid. Kind of like Hawaii - you definitely want sleeveless or short sleeved tops plus some shorts.

Good luck - and enjoy!:)
