Rice and Beans made me so happy

Even from the NY area....when I had rice and beans at 3 different restaurants I was just totally blown away. I mean...how could such a simple meal tast so good.

 

what the heck do they do to make them so great.

LOL!!! I totally agree. They taste so good no matter where we've been in San Juan. I could just eat rice and beans the whole time and be a happy camper :D

It is also one of my favorites here. Arroz con habichuelas- yum

I am a terrible cook, but they are really pretty easy to make (just a lot of cutting stuff up) and taste good even homemade. Do a google search for "habichuela puerto rico recipe" and you will find simple recipes.

I also like the yellow rice with pigeon peas (arroz con gandules). I think the secret is soffrito which seems to be onion, green pepper (I use anahiems) and garlic. If you can't find gandules you can switch out with lentils.

Found a recipe online and made some tonigt...YUM! Not exactly the same but good enough to hold me over till we get back to Puerto Rico in October :D

My husband is from PR and I cant wait to try the rice and gandules in San Juan on our cruise in Sept. Have never been there so dont really know what to expect, but cant wait for the adventure!

the beans are not a side dish apart from the rice, they go on top of the rice.

rice and beans (red or pink) are a basic in the puerto rican cuisine.

you can find them everywhere.
