Show Boaters: Sky One Launch Search For Cruise Ship Entertainers

Sky One, in conjunction with Jamie Oliver’s Fresh One Productions are looking for people to take part in ‘Show Boaters’ a new television program aimed to find new cruise ship entertainers, who can sing, dance and act.

Whilst the details of the new show are yet to be finalised, it is believed that those taking part will compete for a prize guaranteed to open up a lot of opportunities a for the lucky winner.

Whilst it is unconfirmed as to whether they will actually be rewarded with a full-time position on a cruise ship, the show is aiming to follow the contestants on a journey of personal discovery as they compete against each other to see who has what it takes to be the ship’s star performer.

Aside from the more ‘talent-show’ aspects of the program, contestants will also get a glimpse of the inner workings of a cruise ship, whilst assisting with the crew’s daily duties, such as serving in the restaurants and cleaning up the public areas.

Seasoned cruise ship entertainers have been quick to commend the new idea; Gary Williams, who himself has starred in his own show on cruises for the past 20 years commented “I have often wondered how some X-Factor or Pop Idol winners would cope having to perform their own 50 minute solo show to an international audience. On many luxury cruise lines the standard of entertainment is very high...it sounds like this competition will prepare the hopefuls for the demands and realities of a long-term career”.

Show Boaters:

SHOW BOATERS is a mix of reality docusoap and talent contest. This series, coming soon to Sky 1, follows ten passengers aboard a luxury cruise ship as they battle it out as entertainers - competing to prove that they've got what it takes to be the headline act.

As well as preparing in two teams for their weekly show, the contestants will also join the ship's crew in carrying out the full range of ship's duties - from slaving in the galley, looking after the demanding fellow passengers or scrubbing the decks.

Each week the teams will be given a new routine or genre to master for the weekend show, with the members of the worst performing team getting the worst jobs the following week and the winners receiving luxurious treats. In addition to the cast of competing entertainers, SHOW BOATERS will also feature a cast of regular crew - from the Captain down - who'll not only coach and cajole our entertainers, but also offer a fascinating insight into life on the seas.

Cruise Ship Reality Talent Show Comes To British TV Screens

(12:30 p.m. EDT) -- We've had the X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing and Popstar to Opera Star, so it was only a matter of time before a talent show arrived on our screens searching for a cruise ship entertainment star.

Back in 2010, , Showboaters, featuring the search for the next big talent in cruise entertainment. Fast forward nine months and the programme is about to launch.

Showboaters was shot on Thomson Cruises' flagship, Thomson Dream, in the Caribbean, earlier this year. Ten amateur entertainers, ranging from a 56 year-old hairdresser to a 21 year-old steel worker, battled it out on the high seas for a place in Thomson Dream's entertainment team in the forthcoming Caribbean season.

As well as performing, the finalists had to learn about shipboard life, working in different roles around the ship under the supervision of cruise director Stephen Guy. In true talent show tradition, there was a vote-off, with the passengers as the audience, alongside a panel of judges. Two contestants were cut every week for three weeks, before the grand finale, featuring the final four.

Were they any good, or just a bit ‘cruise ship', to quote X Factor judge Simon Cowell's favourite put-down? You can find out in September, when the eight-part series will air on Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD.
