kbindner Posted August 26, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 26, 2011 Our cruise will be stopping at St. Thomas and we want to go snorkeling at Trunk Bay in St. John. We aren't looking for a party boat - we are just hard core snorkelers and are looking for the best way to get to Trunk Bay from the ship. Any suggestions? searoses Posted August 26, 2011 #2 Share Posted August 26, 2011 take a taxi. if you want to be away from the crowds go to hawksnest or cinammon bay. the crowds will have scared all the fish away at trunk. there will be taxis to take you back whenever you want. get an early start...the coral, etc has all deteriorated over the years so the other beaches are almost as good. the"trail" for novices only. have a great day at our little eden! kbindner Posted August 26, 2011 Author #3 Share Posted August 26, 2011 Thanks searoses. The cruise ship ports in St Thomas so I need to get to St John. Trying to decide if I should do an excursion through the ship or if there is anyone that has gone to Trunk Bay on St. John from St. Thomas on their own. Stevesan Posted August 26, 2011 #4 Share Posted August 26, 2011 There are regularly scheduled ferries leaving from both Red Hook and from Charlotte Amalie. Go to www vinow com for schedules and prices for taxis as well as the ferries. Click on St Thomas and select "transportation".
DiverDavid Posted September 2, 2011 #5 Share Posted September 2, 2011 We've done this as a day trip on our own. Took a taxi (open air truck)from the ship to Red Hook, rode the ferry to St John, then took a taxi to Trunk Bay. It is a US National Park so you do have to pay the entry fee! Be sure to put your dry stuff up in a tree or way back from the water line. Often we watched stuff float away from a good wave. On the way back, we took the ferry to downtown so we could shop then a taxi back to the ship. It's a bit pricy, but you can do it on own own schedule instead of the excursion. There is an underwater trail with signs. If the bottom is churned up, the signs can be a bit hard to see, but it is still fun. Creates a triangle shape next to the a small island. If you are hard core snorkelers, don't bother with Trunk Bay. You will be disappointed.
