NCL Gem Review 9/4/2011 to 9/11/2011

Embarkation

Arrived at 12:00

Upon arrival we were told that we were no longer going to Bermuda and we would be going to Port Canaveral, GSC and Nassau.

Disappointed-but still glad to be going on vacation. Now the cruise line specifically said if you have a problem with this please see a representative. We did not mind the change even though we have done this trip last year on the Jewel

Rooms were ready by the time we boarded so we went and had lunch in the dining room then checked out our room. We were in room 9150 (Handicapped room). So much space I felt guilty using this room so my wife and I went to customer service to see if there was any one in need of a handicapped room and we would be willing to switch. At this time the lady helping us said that she was so grateful for the gesture that she gave a voucher for a free bottle of wine. (FYI we never changed rooms)

All around great service

Casino

Even though I lost the staff was great and fun to talk to.

Port Canaveral

We went to Kennedy Space center

Worth every penny, very educational and fun.

Great Stirrup Cay

We stayed on the boat and enjoyed a beautiful day by the pool reading a book

Nassau

Been there done that a few times so we just wondered around for a few hours then spent the rest of the day by the pool

Disembarkation:

We chose the easy walk off

Left our room at 8:15 and were out of the city by 9:15

Overall we had a great time and were not disappointed even though we had an itinerary change.

A few personal notes I would like to make

1. The cruise line changed the itinerary for a reason but I saw a few people taking it out on the staff at the customer service desk. Remember you had you chance to not go before you got on the ship. We did get a refund of about $40 per person

2. The only place I smelt smoke was in the casino. Everywhere else on the ship people we only smoking in the designated areas.

Thank you for the review. So glad you had a nice cruise even though you had to change itinerary

We are going on the Gem this Sunday to Bermuda.

I am glad NCL rewarded you for your concerns...you deserved it and it was a nice gesture on their part.

How were the shows and entertainment?

Did you go to the disco - Bliss? If so, what type of music was played?

Do you have any specific suggestions or advice regarding the ship?

Did you dine in the MDR....how was the food and service?

Thanks again.

Don

Thanks for your review hitman327. I was on this cruise with you, and I couldn't agree more with your assessment. I see some people are now complaining (after-the-fact) because apparently some ships did go to Bermuda. I think our Captain & the cruise line made the best decision for us. I very much appreciate that we didn't have a rocky & rolly ship...nothing but calm seas for us. I thought the entertainment (Cruise Director's staff) were fabulous. I also had dinner at LaCuccina, LeBistro, Cagney's & Orchid...better in my humble opinion than the MDR.

Remember you had you chance to not go before you got on the ship.

I begin to wonder how many NCL employees frequent this board.

For the record, as of 8:00 am there was no information of the itinerary change. I guess they made this decision between 8:00 am and 11:00 am when I got to the port.

Upon arriving to the port I was given a piece of paper saying that I had the privilege of traveling of traveling to the Bahamas. No mention of an option.

After checking in there was an announcement that if you had a problem with traveling to the Bahamas to see a rep before checking in...oh sorry, too late?

At this point, time off has been scheduled, we've traveled to the port and and checked in. Please don't put forth this BS about we had a choice.

Yeah, no choice. And no clue from Ncl about this change before we got to port.

Sad that we got diverted yet Summit and Veendam BOTH made their Bermuda trips.

Now I get to scramble and rebook 2 trips next year. Thank you Ncl.

PS never book an aft view 8th deck balcony or you will not sleep a wink with Bliss thumping into 2-3am every day. Cries to staff and DJ are in vain, staff will do nothing. Extremely disappointed. Do a search for others who complained, enough said.

LOL Your first comment about NCL employees made me laugh. :)

You are correct that they made the decision to change the itinerary between 8 and 11 a.m. on Sunday. I spoke with the Captain about this and he said they had a conference call with him and the NCL powers that be on Sunday morning to discuss options and make a decision. It really was a last minute decision, which makes sense since the weather is constantly changing. They had notices up for a day or two in advance on their website that an itinerary change was possible -- this couldn't have come as a huge shock to you.

As for whether you had a choice, I have no idea when they first made that announcement. It may be that you were already checked in when it was first made. Or perhaps it was made but you didn't hear it before you checked in. I have no idea what they were offering folks who DID express a problem with the change in itinerary, but presumably it was to rebook at a later date. I'm guessing you could have gone to customer service, even after checking in, and rebooked at a later date. The fact is, you DID have a choice -- you may not have liked the choice or it might not have been realistic for you, but the choice was there nonetheless. Anyway, I really hope you didn't let this ruin your vacation. :(

Some answers to your questions

Dongordon

How were the shows and entertainment? B. The Second city who I love needs to come up with some new material.

Did you go to the disco - Bliss? If so, what type of music was played? Never went to the disco

Do you have any specific suggestions or advice regarding the ship? On Sea Days don’t try and stay by the pool stay on the deck overlooking the pool. Not too crowded and the bar was near by

Did you dine in the MDR....how was the food and service? We had Breakfast and lunch in the MDR I would say the food was a “B” and the service was an “A”

Cruiser303

I gave Cagney’s a “B” because I felt the portions were a little light. 3 shrimp in the shrimp cocktail and my wife order the asparagus and she got 2 small pieces

I can tell you for sure when the announcements started. I was probably the 10th or 11th person in line when the embarkation staff let us start the line (through the zig-zaggy ropes) that led to the security checkpoint. We were told to stop when we got to the front, directly next to the x-ray machines and scanners. THAT'S when an NCL staff person began handing out, to each person individually, the notice of itinerary change. As he handed it to us he clearly said, out loud, "there's been an itinerary change". This was at the security area, well before check-in. Within minutes I heard the 1st of countless announcements that if anyone had issues with the itinerary, that they should see an NCL rep BEFORE BOARDING.

Those announcements happened about every 10 minutes right up until I boarded 45-50 minutes later. As I handed my green #5 boarding zone number card to the person at the gate, he was generally announcing to everyone..."if you have a problem with the itinerary change please do not board the ship".

Was it really noisey? or just that distant thump thump... that music in your room wouldn't drown out,,, I can't understand for the life of my Why put a penthouse and a bowling allies so close together, well on top of one another.

I never heard the "if you have a problem with the itinerary change please do not board the ship" announcement. I read the sheet of paper that said if you had an issue with the itinerary, to let them know. I saw and heard nothing about "do not board the ship".

I was wondering, however, if anyone would realistically be able to get a refund for this cruise and just turn around and go back home. Personally, I would have loved to take a raincheck on a Bahamas cruise and actually go to Bermuda another time, but there was just no way to do it without incurring unreasonable costs to turn around and go back home and re-schedule vacations from both our jobs. (They already had someone temping for me at my job.) It was completely absurd if they were actually telling people they didn't have to go on this cruise and could reschedule their vacations another time. The money they would have lost that way would be SIGNIFICANTLY more than simply reimbursing people for the difference in the cruise fares. Can you imagine if 50% of folks took them up on that offer?

If none of the other cruise lines went to Bermuda (or if they did, and had bad weather), this itinerary change would have been understandable, but that wasn't the case. All the other Bermuda cruises went to Bermuda and had good weather.

All I expect is to be reimbursed for the difference since we paid for a more expensive Bermuda itinerary, and ended up with a cheaper Bahamas itinerary. The $40 we were refunded was only the difference in port charges, not the difference for the cruise price.

I sent my letter (via fax) yesterday to NCL, and am awaiting a response.

Just curious....what was the difference in price between Florida and the Bahamas and the Bermuda cruise?

For the time of year and cabin category we were in, the difference is approximately $150 - $200. If you take off the $40 we were refunded for port charges, it is still $110 - $160 difference between Bahamas and Bermuda itineraries.

For folks who have not been to Bermuda, and have only been the Bahamas, the difference between Bermuda and the Bahamas is like the difference between going to Madison/Fifth Avenue and Canal Street. It's really a world apart.

I agree with you that Bermuda is better, but people have different views. I did not realize there was even a difference in price.

I booked a surprise Bermuda cruise for my wife for our 40th Anniversary for this Sunday and after found out that she prefers the Bahamas. That being said, I believe the cruise to the Bahamas is only a 1/2 day and she does not like the private island. I think I made the right decision.

I was in a aft penthouse (8630) on deck 8 this cruise. we sepent a lot of time in our cabin and on our balcony, we never heard a sound. this cabin was a wonderful choice!

I'm not sure how anyone going on the cruise last week did not expect and plan for an itinary change. It was prety clear all week that Katia was likey to hit Bermuda hard. We brought a bahams travel guide with us just in case. I was very disapointed that we did not get to Bermuda, but I truly apreicate NCLs thoughtfullness in making the desion to rerout. It would not have been fun to travel through 35ft waves only to get to port and have all our planned activities rained out anyway. By making the change we had calm seas and lovely weather for the entire week.

You are absolutely right PSA. For days before our sailing, there was plenty of back and forth on the Roll Call over whether or not we would sail to Bermuda or a "surprise" port. There had to be doubt in peoples minds. I believe the NCL site on Sunday morning said there would be an update as a final decision had not yet been made. That sure put doubt in my mind and I went to the port knowing there was a good chance we were not going to Bermuda.

Disappointed? of course but I still had a great time and was thankful for the decision to keep us in calm waters and blue skies!

I agree with you Isabel, I think the cruise line and the Captain made a good decision based upon the information they had on Sunday morning. Just because the other 2 ships went to Bermuda doesn't mean that they had calm seas ...because they didn't. And I can attest to the fact that it's no fun being on a ship in high seas.

I was on the NCL Majesty when there was ONLY a tropical storm (not even a hurricane) in the Gulf of Mexico ...and all the windows in the Spinnaker Lounge broke in, and all the bottles in the liquor store fell to the floor, and all the bottles in the parfumerie fell to the floor, and there were ropes everywhere for people to hold on to...and they then closed the upper decks to all of us.

When we left NY on the Gem, on Sunday 9/4, Katia was still a threat to Bermuda. I am grateful for the calm seas we experienced on our cruise. As for money back? I accepted their cruise contract when I bought the cruise/made my reservation. As a solo cruiser I paid 200% of my balcony cabin. I KNEW I was cruising at an iffy time of year, I KNEW that the cruise line has the right to change the itinerary without consulting me, I KNEW that the only compensation that's due to me is port fees/taxes from a missed port. I rec'd $58.44 and am happy. I don't think the difference in cruise price is worth me getting all aggravated about....if it was thousands of dollars it would be different, but it's not.

Final thought: is that I had a FABULOUS time on this cruise...for which I thank the Captain's & cruise line's forethought on my behalf.

The only place I smelt smoke was in the casino. Everywhere else on the ship people we only smoking in the designated areas.

I truly wish that the only place people were smoking on this cruise was in the designated areas, I am aware that people have the option of smoking in their stateroom and on their balcony, however if NCL wish to continue to allow it they should do something about blocking the smoke from travelling into adjoining staterooms.

We had a rear facing suite on the Sept 4th cruise, EVERY morning we woke up to a sore throat and our stateroom reaked of smoke from the adjoining suite, like I say I completely understand people wanting to pursue this habit I simply do not wish to join them in it, when is the cruise industry going to wake up and realize that not everyone appreciates having their air poluted

We almost always had smoke wafting into our room when we opened our balcony doors. Its amazing how much smoke we encountered just while sitting on our balcony. Unfortunately, many times we actually had to just go inside when the folks on either side of us were on their balcony smoking.

I have a feeling this will get even worse when NCL prohibits smoking in cabins. It means EVERYONE will be going onto their balcony to smoke.

I believe there should be non-smoking areas of the ship where all cabins in these sections are non-smoking. Hopefully they will do something about this if enough non-smokers speak up about it.

That $40.00 refund was the difference in port charges. Bermuda has one of the highest port charges. NCL had to refund you the money. We had our trip cut short by 1day/nite and received a refund of $28.00 on our cruise thanks to Katia.
