When visiting a beach, what to do with your bag?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

When we go cruising this weekend, we're wondering what to do when we happen to go to a beach without a locker rental service.

We're planning to snorkel, wade, and frollick in the water, but on the beach, we have our towels, cameras, shoes, etc. If we happen to go to a beach without a locker rental, what would you suggest we do with our bag of trix? :)

We use a small ski lock - its has a cable which pulls out about 3 feet and then reattaches, and uses a combination. Put it around tree, beach chair, etc. Not absolute security, but why would a thief mess with a locked bag when there are unattended bags all over the place. Bought these locks for skis, but use them all the time now.

We usually layout on the beach or float just infront of our chairs so we leave eveything there at the chairs. Also we are generally just at beaches for the cruise ship and not public beaches. If I were going to be more active as you areI would bring very little, maybe a disposible camera, bring a water pouch for your cruise card and any cash that you bring to keep it with you etc.

I'll second what Gary said. If there isn't going to be anyone near your bags for any length of time, don't take anything of value. Disposable camera is a definite. And some type of water pouch for your Seapass card, cc and cash.

Most of the time when things are taken it's not because it was in plain sight, it's because the whole bag was taken.

That said, we've never had any problems on any of the beaches we've been on during our cruises. So don't stress too much and enjoy the beach.

I always like to bring at least a clip or beaner to latch my bag to a chair or whatever so someone has to make an effort to steal the whole bag. Sometimes if there is a bar, the bartender will hang onto it. It is not easy to snorkle and watch your bag.

Ski locks - put "ski lock" into Google, and one of the first results is for Dick's Sporting, which I think is a nationwide chain. The type I use is called a "Serirus No Jack" at that site and is $15. I think I have also seen similar locks sold as travel accessories - sold at the kind of places where college students by their gear for backpacking Europe.

Leave her on the ship.

ROFL, that was too funny! :D

Thanks for the suggestions, yall. I'll look into a ski-lock, and let Naren know that such a thing exists. We might be purchasing one, thanks for the help.

We have a water wallet, so I'm not worried about the cash at all. It's just the lotions/sunglasses/water (and other crap) in our mesh bag that I'm worried about. I do like the idea of locking the bag to something (or hiding it underneath towels. I think I'd be more upset if someone took one of my ship towels. Are they still charging for lost towels?

Maybe you can explain further, but I for one would never draw attention to my belongings by using a ski lock, Wouldn't it scream - "Valuables Here - Come and take them!!" ?? The things you mention except for what falls under cra* aren't very expensive - except of course if you have a pair of Oakleys - (wouldn't take them to a beach and leave them though). Just don't take too much and don't worry about it. BTW no one will bother with your ship towels.

maybe i'm just that naive, but i've just left my stuff out in the open. just like deb says, if there's a lock on it, it's screaming "LOOK AT ME, TRY TO STEAL ME!"

The last time I was in Coz, i just bought a watch, left it, in its box and shopping bag under the beach chair, had my backpack on the beach chair. everything was just as i left it when i got back after "frolicking" in the water.

Yep, yep, yep, ....definitely do not leave anything you can't live without or replace out in the open (locked or otherwise). I could certainly replace my Coppertone, my Maui Jims, and my Poland Spring Water. On the other hand, don't EXPECT thievery....or that will be exactly exactly what you will get. According to Karmic Quid Pro Quo...a little trust goes a long way. Be smart, but not paranoid.

a ski lock ? when was the last time you saw a tree on the beach and you can lift the leg of the beach chair.

I did read someware that they put all there stuff in a bag except for the sail card and cash, that went into a zip lock bag and they burried it in the sand. I think im going to burry my treasure.

Guess I'm one of the few adhering to the "lock the bag" theory - but it has worked for me so far, I guess I think in terms of a thief only having a few seconds, so why mess with a lock. But, anyway, when I said tree, I was thinking of Hawaii - if you've been there you know what I mean. Beach chair - usually there is a metal "loop" at some place on the bottom of a lounger.

Hi All,

We just got back, and in every port, we just kept the bag hidden on our big sheet that we laid down. Nothing happened to it, but then again we were near other people, so I don't think a theif would come up and steal stuff in the broad daylight.

britchicknyc - There were safes in the room. Ours had to be maintained because the battery died. But they fixed it, and I kept my jewelry, our cash (which dwindled each day thanks to the casino), and my passport in that.

Thanks all for your help!
