What exactly is dry dock?

There's "wet dock" and "dry dock". In dry dock, the ship is placed in a special enclosed dock where water can be pumped out and the underside of the ship can be tended to. While the underside is being cleaned/repaired/painted, the inside usually gets some sprucing up too.

 

In wet dock, they basically do the same stuff as drydock but don't do any of the work below the water-line. Drydock is scheduled for every 2-3 years or so, unless emergency work is required.

 

Drydock is mucho more expensive than a wet-docking.
