I agree! My kids were not sick when we left, but I was concerned with ear/sinus pain, as I had it very bad last time I flew. So I gave my kids Dimetapp cold and allergy. It is an antihistamine & decongestant. It helps open everything up so there is less pressure and pain. Like I said previouslly, we did the saline spray and advil too. Neither one of them had any problems. PLUS another good side effect is that they were knocked out the entire flight, lol. I had a whole bag packed up with activities to keep them occupied and never had to open it once.:D

I don't have kids, but I got a very bad cold from a sick kid on board ship. I would say that traveling with a kid who has a cold is no big deal. However, keeping the child away from people who are healthy (at least within some sort of reason) should be practised. I only wished the mother of the child I was playing with on the tour bus who was ill would have informed me her child was sick. (Not being a parent, I can't tell when a child is ill. My mother was the one who knew the kid was sick from the beginning of the tour. :rolleyes: )

Dramamine also tends to knock one out...especially when a child is accidentally given the adult variety...I know from experience...

I'm with you dj.....why have them experience pain if you can give thme something...if it knocks them out...well, that's just icing on the cake.

My kids were big fans of Dimeatapp.

My girls still use decongestants before they fly...and so do I. The pressure up there just about kills my oldest....it can be nasty.

If you ever see a gorgeous, blue eyed 20 year old in a plane holding her head with tears in her eyes..it's my kid....she hurts with a decongestant...without one, she is really bad. She's full of scar tissue in her ears from many ear infections as a kid...when doctors look in her ears, they always screw their faces up because it's such a mess in there.

I agree...but I don't think Dj said she drugs her kids to knock them out..she said she didn't want them to have ear pain...little kids have small, underdeveloped ear canals (which is why most kids get ear infections and frequently need tubes) and the pressure is too much for their little canals to handle. A decongestant is a safe way from keeping them from having their ear drums tear.....

I can't imagine a kid going through that.

our youngest came down with Strep seven days before sailing. She did 6 days of Zithromax before we boarded and managed to pick up a cold virus a day or two prior. Congestion, runny nose, coughing, no fever. Did we go - you bet. Were we turned away - nope. Was she denied entry to Camp Carnival - nope.

 

We did have an interesting encounter checking them in at Camp one night. The children ran up a few flights on the way to Camp and our youngest started coughing while waiting in line. Another parent that had just checked her child in to the Camp immediately checked her child back out for fear that her child might get sick. (She stated that to the counselor within our ear shot while watching my daughter hack up a spleen).

 

My interpretation: we have our child in a day care setting where colds and sickness are a part of life. I suspect the other child stays at home and is not exposed to a lot of illness. Never the 'twain shall meet. So it goes...

 

Actually, I persoanlly think you should have reconsidered putting your kid in Camp Carnival........in fact, it was probably a rude thing to do.........

Thanks Halos, that is exactly what I meant. I did it because of the advice I rcv'd from their ped and because of my history of ear problems as a child and while flying. I KNOW that pain...I'll do whatever it takes to avoid putting my kids thru it. And hey...if it happens to have a side effect of making them sleepy, I'm not complaining!

My kids is much better, thanks to the high dose of antibiotics and the cough medicine the Dr. prescribed. Thanks for your concerns. And Yes we are going on the cruise tomorrow and we are going to have a blast.

I was thinking about this a little more last night. I thought I might challenge your qualifications to make that statement but changed my mind. Instead, I'll let you know that we were in full compliance with the Camp Carnival illness guidelines. There are several symptoms that preclude attendence at the camp. Runny noses and coughs are not on that list.

 

So, I'm following Carnival's rules and for that I'm rude? Go figure.

Intruder...I have to agree with you. I know when my girls were little and I dropped them at school there was always another kid 'coughing up a spleen'. Although it always caused me to heave a huge sigh...it's just the way it is. Kids, like I said, are ALWAYS sick. It's just a fact of life. The only way to keep them from getting colds is to keep them in a bubble. To expect someone to not cruise becasue someone in their family has a cold is ludicrous. No sane person would cancel a cruise because their kid had a cold and no sane person should be irate if someone else doesn't.

If people are worried about their kids catching something, they shouldn't travel with them...anywhere. Cruise/plane...makes no difference.

If you travel with your children, you need to know they will be exposed to a whole slew of stuff....and that's the chance you take when you travel with a child. Colds should be the least of a parent's worry for goodness sake.

the thing is it's not just children. Should an adult with a cold refrain from gambling in the casino? How many slot machine handles do you want to pull now? How about those dice on the craps table? How about sitting in close proximity playing 21? Gimme a break!
