17 yr old wants to watch grandpa play craps!

From the Pearl freestyle daily in October. Back page, lower right hand corner, point #6

"Casino: You must be 18yrs or older (and have ID) to gamble or be in the casino."

Perhaps it would make a difference where the Pearl was sailing at the time. If she were in Alaska or US waters, then I know there would be some different rules. For example, under age 21 are not allowed to drink alcohol on US or Alaska sailings. In the Caribbean young adults are allowed to purchase and consume beer and wine with an accompanying parent's written consent. In Europe, 18 and older are allowed to purchase and consume with out the waiver.

It would seem logical to me that casino policies may also be different outside of the US. But maybe not.

Has he ever been to a casino ---- has he seen -- at home, how to play craps- ? He sounds like a nice young man. But do you ever see what goes on in a casino ---- sometimes a little too much of everything --- I know we can not shelter our children from all bad eliments --- we as parents can only try ---- There are rules and there are rules --- some for you and some for me --- but they are there --- we as adults --- know better --- NCL must have there reasons why 18 -- (Not sure why that is the magic number)

we give them the car keys at 16 --- the car can kill---

Yes I do go to the casino --- someplace --- even the adults act -- let's say -- not like adults -- and why do we want to be there --- I don't no--- Maybe to watch grandpa play craps ---

Enjoy your cruise--wish I was going at this time ---

In NCL's online policies - must be 18 to gamble. Nothing is mentioned in those policies about being inside the casino (see my 2nd post).

Yes I seen post #2 -

"The asterisks after casino age seem to indicate that is is only if the person is gambling (placing a bet), not if they are just watching.

Casino **** Age 18 and over"

And I also seen your interpretation of that statement.

OP, personally I don't really care what you do. I won't be on the ship or in that casino so I don't care if your son was 6 in watching people (because chances are there will be others there besides Grandpa).

As I said my only issue with your thread, was that you came on under one pretense (don't want to break rules) and after 3 different places you were shown (and thats being liberal allowing you to interpret your post #2 the way you wanted) it would be against the rules. And then proceeded to argue it to only choose to listen to those who didn't have an issue with him being there and didn't figure he would be caught. So go do your own thing and enjoy your cruise. Again I really don't care.

*Note: BTW the Peal was on the Western Caribbean itinerary.

????????

I would love to hear this. What do YOU think goes on in casinos? You're acting as though people are having sex on the Pai Gow tables. I spend a lot of time in casinos, and I can't say I've seen anything that I would want to shelter my child from.

Appreciate your thoughts. Yes, he just wants to watch Grandpa play craps, no he has never been in a casino. He is a very good and responsible kid. On the other hand, my hubby thinks we should take the kids for a walk (just a walk) for 15 min. down Bourbon St. in New Orleans after we arrive on an evening flight the night before the cruise! Comments? No, wait, just kidding.

I've sheltered my kids plenty - nothing but PBS until they were 8 yo. No sugar when they were small, held the line on PG and PG-13 movies as we felt appropriate. Don't buy the kids R-rated movie tickets under age (they card each kid at the door, so he couldn't have gotten in otherwise). But as a previous poster said, the question was not about parenting.

We will follow the posted rules on the Spirit and will report back. :)

Realizing it is not the Spirit but since the Epic walk through casino was mentioned a few times I thought that I would add there was signage (I forget the exact wording) but it said you must be 18 or over to stay in the casino.

A 17 year old watching craps is kind of a tricky situation in and of itself in that a crowded, fast table would make it easier for him to not be noticed but at the same time may be irritating to those actually playing if he is standing around with a bunch of narration of the game going on so he can learn. A less crowded table would be more ideal but again he may stand out more.

When my daughter was 17, she came into the casino to let us know where she was going (on the Sun I think?) and stopped to watch us play for a minute and was asked for ID and then asked to leave. I believe NCL rules are the same as land-based casinos - minors can walk through (if that's necessary) but may not dawdle. in Caesar's AC, I have seen kids removed from areas even near the casino, like 15 feet from the actual casino floor..

It really sounds like someone got a casino confused with a brothel or maybe an opium den.

I agree, I haven't seen too much hanky panky going on in any casinos I have been in.

thanks for the laugh :D

No No no -- you got this all wrong -- He sounds like a fine young man --- I was not sure--- why craps -- why gambling --- and the last time I was on the Spirit --- the bar/entertainment room just off the casino looks just like a brothel-- with the beds, the colors of purple, reds and black -- similar to Bliss on Gem -- the night life is really something --- and maybe during the daytime too ---

casino -- heavy drinking -- foul lanuage ---heavy smoke and there are those who do not want kids around ---

how about going fishing w/grandpa --

You do realize the OP said her son was 17? Thats less than 12 months from an adult. I seriously think even being a "good boy", if he doesn't know about any of the above stuff he has been way too sheltered.

Seriously I have seen more "heavy drinking" and "foul language" out by the pool than I have in the casino (and trust me I spend a lot of time in casinos).

Sorry but I think you are over dramatizing the evils of the casino. Whether you agree with casinos and/or gambling is a personal feeling and you are more than welcome to that. But to inidicate that somehow this is going to corupt this poor innocent child I think is way over the top. JMO

I have no problem with the OP saying he's going to try and a let a 17 year old observe. Maybe he'll get kicked out, maybe he won't.

I think the problem that many have on here is that he said he wanted to do this, but not if it was in violation of any rules because he's a great kid, etc, etc. Then when its pretty obvious what the policy is, you're trying to find a loophole that it doesn't necessarily say that. It's like saying "I didn't know the speed limit here was 70 officer, I didn't see any speed limit signs" - wen its obvious the max speed limit is 70.

Anyhow, OP - I think you're fine trying . It's not that big a deal (IMHO). You might want to drop the soap box moral compass bit if you don' want to be scalped by many here though.

Wow......someone was sheltered too much by their own parents. In Las Vegas, you have to walk through the casino to get anywhere in the hotel. Families walk all around while people are gambling. No issues whatsoever. Your description doesn't sound like any casino I've ever been to.

I could be totally wrong, but I'm pretty sure Cruiser12 was being sarcastic.

OK - I promise that this will be my last post until we are on the Spirit and have found out the rules. The reason it is not like saying "officer, I didn't see any speed limit signs" is that I have posted and 100% commit that if anywhere on the Spirit it says no one under 18 is allowed in the casino - posted outside, inside, or on the dailies, we will not allow him to enter - period. No go ahead and see if they catch you, no try to look older and blend in.

If there is not posted information saying so, then my dad may take him in to watch. And if someone tells them that the policy is for only 18 years and older to stand and watch - without a doubt they will comply.

Not sure what this has to do with a moral compass. On a cruise to Alaska or Hawaii the rules may be different than in the Caribbean or in Europe. Following the laws/rules/policies of where you are living or visiting is simple....you just need to know WHAT they are WHERE you are. And I plan to follow them where we are going...in 6 days! Yippee!

Even simpler - why don't you just ask the casino manager when you're on board and let him state the policy rather than ask to see if their is a loophole or not ? It sounds like you're trying to find a loophole in their printed documentation. Just ask them and they'll tell you.

  • 4 weeks later...

Am reporting back after a great trip on the Spirit!

The casino was a non-issue for us - hard to believe that I spent so much time worrying and witting to you all about it!

Dad and Mom checked out the casino several times during the cruise, but unfortunately it was either closed (in port), or the craps table was not yet open - or had no players to make it interesting.

On the last night at sea, Mom (who had just been set free from confinement due to the norovirus) said - let's all go before dinner! 5 of 6 of us were age, and my Mom said that she just didn't think that it would be an issue to take the one 17 yr. old with us, so we did.

The signs on the Spirit do NOT give an age for the casino, the Daily does say "must be 18 to gamble or enter the casino".

When our group of 6 went at 6:15PM, there was a family walking out with their 1 year old, and we also passed an obvious young teen. There were about 10 others in the entire casino, and nobody was working the craps table yet. Dad played a few hands of blackjack while DH and DS watched. Mom and DD fed the slots and ended up $7 ahead. We left for dinner in Windows 25 min. after entering the casino.

That is it. A very non-issue, but both my dad and son had a great time doing other things during our vacation.
