We are planning to rent a car at most of our stops on our New England Cruise.

Could those of you that have done this give us suggestions as to who is the closest car rental company at each of our stops?

We are stopping in:

Halifax

Sydney

Charlottetown PEI

QuebecCity

Gaspe

Portland

Bar Harbor

Thanks so much!

There are no car rental agencies in Bar Harbor. The closest one is located at the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB), about 22 miles from BH. There are 2 agencies there: http://www.bhbairport.com/services.html .

What you do is to make arrangements to have the agency deliver the rental car to the town dock where you would pick it up and return it there. I would suggest making arrangements before you leave on your cruise.

There are other options; one would be to hire a taxi (At Your Service Cab Co) to take you to the airport and return. Another would be to take the free bus (Island Explorer), route #1, to & from the airport but this is only available from the end of June through Columbus Day and would be tied to the bus schedule.

For Portland, there is a cab company in walking distance of where you will be docked. Enterprise Rent a Car, 1 Marginal Way is about 1.2 miles away from the dock. I believe you can arrange to be picked up.

You will get lots more information by using the search feature. Look for the pink bar to the right of the blue bar at the top of each page.

Here is some information from my notes:

Halifax: We decided to rent a car for the day. Enterprise will pick us up at pier & drop us off and the cost is under $60 for the day.

There is an Alamo location in the Westin Hotel on Hollis St. The back of the Hotel is across the street from the port and is less than a 5 minute walk. There is a Budget location on Hollis St which would be about a 10 minute walk. Enterprise is much farther away in Scotia Square (a small mall in an office tower) and would be about 20-25 minutes walk, however they may pick you up. Hertz is in the Marriott Hotel on Hollis St about 20 minutes away.

Budget will pick you up at the pier and return you there as well.

Check out Discount Car Rental at Brackley and the Bypass (near the airport). I have rented from them 2x in the last few years and they have always had the best rate and they pickup/drop off at the Pier.

I highly recommend renting a car in Sydney and Charlottetown. For Halifax you can stay right in the city on the waterfront and surroundings with no need for a car. If you wish to visit Peggy's Cove then you should rent a car.

I hope this helps a bit.
