what is "dry dock"?

It's a dock where a ship is brought in, the water is pumped out, and repairs/refurbishments can be made more conveniently, especially if the work being done is on a part of the ship that is normally under water.

johnql is exactly right..and the dawn just got out of dry dock about a month or so ago. from what was posted here I think one of the azipods (sp?) was repaired and the crew touched up paint, cleaned, etc. i'm not sure if anything else was done, but that's all i remember for now! :D
