World Gallery Posted January 9, 2012 #1 Share Posted January 9, 2012 I am having trouble figuring our transportation to the Igloo hotel in Helsinki. They say that public transportation will take 3 times as long. I contacted one company they suggested but you must call in your order and you can't do so early. Are there taxis lined up and waiting when you dock in Helsinki? How difficult it is to get one? We are a family of 7 so we need a van or 2 cars. Anyone know the rates? Thanks

Thanks There are a couple of posters who live in Helsinki and probably can give you an absolute accurate answer, but from our experience, if they do line up, the first one's off the ship will take them. Each ship has maybe 2,000 people trying to get off and there jsut aren't enough taxi's to supply them. There are public buses, but our experience was that the queue was so long, it wasn't worth it. We got into town by taxi, but not ours. Another couple pre booked a taxi to pick them up and asked us if we wanted to share the ride. of course we agreed. I would assume you should be able to pre book a taxi, but I simply cannot say for sure. There is a time frame when you dock to when you can actually leave the ship, so if you can call as soon as you dock, you should be able to have a taxi waiting for you by the time you disembark. HOPEFULLY Don't know if you have seen many images of the sights of Helsinki> It is a marvelous city. Much newer than several of the other ports. You need to get to Market Square, as a starting point, and most things are very close to that site. The Lutheran Cathedral in Senate Square, a few block walk from Market Square http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1063.jpg Back to Market Square. try and spend some time ehre, jsut wandering around the booths and vendors. http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster1150.jpg A few short blocks in another direction is the Uspensky Orthodox Cathedral http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1135.jpg Back to Market square, many decide to take the ferry to the Suemenlina Fortress http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1118.jpg After that, back to market Square for some delicious food, prepared right there on huge grills and bowls (very inexpensive also) http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster1147.jpg Where you will need transportation is to get to the Church in the Rock. A place not to e missed http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe1107.jpg Cheers Len

Giantfan13 Posted January 10, 2012 #4 Share Posted January 10, 2012 great stuff UT. From your info, if one desires a taxi at the port, they can just call from the port they are in prior to going to Helsinki, and that should be no problem. World Gallery Posted January 10, 2012 Author #5 Share Posted January 10, 2012 Regarding Helsinki taxis, check out: http://www.taksihelsinki.fi/htdeng/page.aspx http://www.taksihelsinki.fi/laskuri/Default.aspx?lang=uk http://www.taksihelsinki.fi/htdeng/page17.aspx This is the one I did check out and this is the one that won't take orders in advance and only by phone, no email. If I can't find one that will take an order before we leave for our cruise, by email, I may use them. Thanks.
