Galveston restaurants

So, I've looked at Trip Advisor, and I know what the top restaurants are listed there for Galveston. I was wondering if perhaps I was missing something, because the first 7 have nothing particularly to do with seafood.

So, ssb and Galveston cruiser... or others: if you wanted.... say... fresh fried shrimp... where would you go? In April, I went to Guido's, and we really did not enjoy the fried shrimp. I have down Shrimp and Stuff. Any good ideas? Thanks.

When I checked their menu, it looked nice, but a little more than we wanted to spend. Perhaps we should just go with Shrimp and Stuff or Salt Grass. You surely know what you are going to get with Salt Grass and we have those in Plano, but I do like their fried shrimp. I just am not interested in Italian, Mexican , or Greek for this adventure. We don't normally eat shrimp out. We buy at katies fresh and eat in . For local try Benno's Cajun and I actually have enjoyed millers fried sh but not had it in couple years. We frequent original Mexican , Rudy and Pacos, Di Bellas, for other than fried shrimp! We love a kt del mar and snapper at R&p

not fried though

and at dibellas a toscano shrimp meal again not fried. Keep asking and also I will post up tomorrow best of lists.

I always eat at Fishermans Wharf at Pier 21, They have excellent choices also stuffed shrimp with crabmeat or Jalapeno's Angels on Horseback, Crabcakes are excellent as well and you can eat outside by the water. If you want oysters Landry's is good for that, Their seafood Plates have gone down in Quality since they lost their Chefs from The last Hurricane. Saltgrass is excellent for Steaks and Surf and Turf, Benno's I wasnt inpressed with but everyone has their favorites, You can park free at Fishermans Wharf, Get your tickets stamped at the front entrance Checkin. Me and the Wife have been going down to Galveston for 10 Cruises, 10 Yrs. now and stay 3 Days before the Cruise. Bon Appetite.;)

Tillman Fetitta's family is from Galveston.

But it is a large chain.

Saltgrass and Fishermans Wharf are in chain.

Does not mean they are bad.

Tillman got his start in Houston

and we have eatin in his group for many years.

If you don't mind driving about 13 miles,you might take the ferry to the Bolivar Peninsula and go to Crystal Beach to a place called Stingaree.They have very good and fresh sea food.The fried shrimp is really good.

We ate at Shrimp and Stuff this past week end. It was very busy. (a good sign.) People in our group had the fried shrimp, oyster po boy, shrimp po boy, gumbo, and coconut shrimp. All were delicious and very reasonably priced. One does order at the counter and is given one of those light up receivers. (don't know what they are really called.) The food was ready quickly. Everyone was well pleased. Now this is not a dress up place. I would say that there was atmosphere, but not a quiet, refined atmosphere if you get my drift. We will be heading back there in 18 or so days. I loved it.

I did see a something on TV or read an article

that said food in Seafood and Stuff was not institutional....

and everything other than seafood was bought fresh

and prepared daily accordingly!

 

Seafood is all restaurants is not truly "fresh" unfrozen,

unless the fishing seasons are in affect,

and it is caught and bought fresh locally by the restaurants

during that time.

Or

Higher dollar restaurants

can pay to bring in fresh seafood daily

from other suppliers

in markets where seasons are open.

And charge for it!!!

 

All other fish is usually flash frozen on the fishing boats...

so they can stay out longer and catch more.....

and then brought in

and shipped to markets and thawed out.

The markets thaw as needed and presume

restaurants thaw as needed also!

 

This is according to friend, who is major player and large wholesale distributor

of seafood from the gulf coast, in conversation just two weeks ago!

Based on question of good fresh fried shrimp!

We ate at Tortuga's the night before our cruise. The chips and salsa were delicious, as well as the food. I had the tequila lime shrimp, which ended up coming out in the form of fajitas. It was amazing! The margaritas were great as well.

 

After dinner, we walked along the beach across the street and watched the sunset. I would totally recommend it for dinner and would love to eat there again the next time I am in Galveston.

Good plan. Galveston seems like a fun place to go for the weekend. Maybe when the weather is warmer, so we can go to the beach, have some seafood, maybe even go to Schlitterbahn.
