Key West Excursions

Has anyone been deep sea fishing in Key West? If so who do you recommend we go through and how much did it cost?...Thanks

Hi - I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you, I will look through my stuff from our cruise this past December and see if I can find anything. I was replying because I live in McDonough! You're the first person on the boards I have seen that lives close by. What ship are you sailing on? I can highly recommend the Century - she's beautiful, really a great ship. I'm sure they all are though.

I've never taken a deep sea fishing excursion from a ship but I lived most of my life in south Fl and we always vacationed in the Keys so I can tell you that there is excellent fishing there. You can contact the Chamber of Commerce or go online and find out about fishing charters. The fishing is great, the water is clear and the average temp is 73! It's a beautiful place. You can't go wrong no matter what you do! And if you decide not to fish, take the Conch Train and learn something of its history. The tours a little hokey but it's fun!

I agree with you last post.
For first time cruises to KW, the Conch (pronounced by locals as Conk)Train offers a good overview of the city.
And, if you leave port after evening, don't forget the "show" at Mallory Square. The best show is the sunset and people watching is a must!

Everyone seems to mention the people watching at night. Are they more fun to watch at night cause of all their visits to the bars?? Do the "fun ones" just come out at night? cruzzer it's just too bad so few ships hang around past 2pm any more cause sunsets are the best. I really love the guy with the trained cats! Where else could someone get housecats to walk wires and jump through hoops 6 feet off the ground? Ya gotta love it!

IMO,
To say the least, Key West is an electic group of people, animals, entertainment, and things you many never see again. Seeing the sun set is a ritual to many and the folks are very friendly.
Too bad most ships set sail before the sun sets.

We've only had one stop in Key West as a port and would jump at the chance to have it again. I've heard that the locals have made a deal with the cruiselines that the ships have to sail before sunset so as not to ruin the skyline during sunsets for the islanders. From the last posts, I'm guessing this isn't true.

We had a fantastic day in Key West. Wish someone had warned me about the Mararitas at Margaritaville. One goes a long way. [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif[/img]

I also wish I had known about the trained cats. That would have been a must see for me. I'm guessing my husband would thank you for not posting right before our cruise. [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]

After my Margarita, I talked my husband into having our picture taken with Charlotte, Arnold, and Jake the parrots on Duval St. I was so impressed with how the owner protected his birds from obnoxious kids and even adults trying to be cute that I wanted the picture. We were docked at Mallory square and had to leave before sunset. The ship that docked behind us did not block Mallory squares view of the sunset so I am guessing they got to stay. All the fun people watching happens at night on mallory. All the acts set up before sunset and the vendors come out, and the square fills with the locals.

We have been to Key West a couple of times for short vacations via car. Interesting place. Lots of history there. I echo the thoughts about the Conch Train. Don't miss that, or else the Old Town Trolley, or both if you have time. The Sunset Festival at Mallory Pier is loads of fun. Both times we were there, there was this islander from St. Kitts that is a contortionist (I think his name is Ibashii?). The cats are great. If you can imagine a show at the circus with lions and tigers jumping through hoops and such, that's what this is, but with house cats. At sunset, there was a guy wearing a kilt playing Amazing Grace on bagpipes. All sorts of venders with food and stuff to sell. Usually some people making music, including a guy playing steel drums. The presence of a cruise ship at Mallory Square at sunset would totally ruin everything, that's why they have to leave before then. If there was room for the ships without using Mallory, it would be a real treat for the cruisers, if only the ships would stay in port that late.

There are some posts there on Deep Sea Fishing ... just "scroll" to find them. [I]As with all of the other CC boards, things are a bit mixed-up due to the tech problems.[/I]

We have a huge Sail Fish named "Key-Key" [I]now hanging in our game room[/I] that we caught in Key West years ago. It brings back fond memories! [img]http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]
