narend Posted February 12, 2012 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2012 We are sailing on the Magic next week with 9-year old DD. Is the cell phone with the child or with a counselor? Do you have to return the cell phone every time you sign out, or at the end of the cruise? Any opinion on whether we would be better off with 2-way radios? Thanks! Julienatul Posted February 12, 2012 #2 Share Posted February 12, 2012 You wont get a cell phone for your 9 year-old its only for the 2-5 age group. Your best bet would be the 2 way radios to keep in contact on the ship.
aggieastrosfan Posted February 12, 2012 #3 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Camp Carnival only provides the cell phones to parents of the 2-5 age group. After that, if there's any still available they will be offered to the 6-8 group. Don't count on being provided a cell phone for a 9 year old. narend Posted February 12, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted February 12, 2012 I should've mentioned that my DD has nut allergies. On one of the forms they strongly recommended the cell phone for kids with allergies. Thanks
5waldos Posted February 12, 2012 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2012 Some people have had luck with 2way radios- we just found them difficult, and my son was 15 at the time. There was a huge amount of crosstalk, you couldn't always hear it go off, or you were someplace where you didn't want it to go off, when they didn't answer you didn't know if they were ignoring you, if they hadn't gotten the call, or if they were actually missing. Some people swear by them though.
AQW Posted February 12, 2012 #6 Share Posted February 12, 2012 They may argue with you about assigning a cell phone for your 9yo - stand your ground, and impress upon them that it is a matter of her health and safety, and their own documents recommend a phone in that case. You'll get a phone. They assign it to you the first time you bring her to Camp Carnival - I suggest going early, because they occasionally run out of phones on sailings with many children. They will give you a phone, a charger, and likely a plastic box to keep them in. You will have to sign that you agree to a $150 charge if the phone gets damaged or lost. The phone stays with YOU while your daughter is attending any CC activities. It allows CC staff to reach you in an emergency, and also allows you to call CC whenever you like to check in if you find that necessary. Your daughter will not have any access to a phone.
