Timelapse Camera on the Balcony...

I have a Brinno Timelapse Weatherproof Jobsite HD Camera that I would like to put on a tripod and zip tie to the back of one of the chairs on our balcony during our upcoming cruise. It's not very big, and if it was zip tied to the back of a chair it wouldn't be at risk of falling off. I can set the camera to take a picture every 5 or 10 minutes for the duration of the entire cruise and then when I get home I will have an instant video of what the view was from the balcony of the my cabin. All the sunrises, sunsets, arriving and leaving ports. I think it would be great. My question is would it be allowed?

Sounds like a really cool idea. Can't wait for you to report back and let us know how it went?? :)

Where is your balcony located??

We will have an aft balcony.

We could take the camera to other areas of the ship if we couldn't leave it unattended and possibly use it to make some neat videos elsewhere. Then put it back at night in hopes of getting a sunset or sunrise or departing or arrival to port. We never seem to wake up in time to see the sun rise, or if we do, we don't enjoy it because we are so tired. But we find it cool to check out the pictures of the sunrise once we get home. But obviously we have only tried it from land based vacations.

You know you have too much camera crap when...

I've been pondering how to go weatherproof so I can give this a try (I'm going to try shorter time lapses with my DSLR, but I'm not leaving it unattended or in the weather).

Digging around I pull out my old Sealife Reefmaster, and whatayaknow - it has a SPY function - one shot every ten seconds (plus other intervals) automatically.

Currently running it to see how long the batteries last, and how many shots I get. 2GB holds 600+ images, about 100 minutes@ 10/sec intervals. Starting there and we'll see tomorrow in the daylight what the other intervals allow.

Well I am the OP, and they did allow me to Zip-tie the timelapse camera to a hook that was on the wall above the window on the balcony.

I figured I should come back here and let you know how it worked out.

Glad it worked out. :) Unfortunately the video won't load on my iPod Touch. I'll have to wait until I'm on a PC. Can't wait to see it. :D

That's awesome! I would love to do that on my Alaska cruise next year.

What was the time setting between pics? Did you have to charge or change the batteries at any point, or did they last for the whole cruise?

It took a picture once every minute, but you could change the settings if you wanted. It automatically stopped taking pictures when it got to dark. We never had to change the batteries for our 6 day cruise. We can watch it back at multiple speeds, and take screen shots of the ports and islands as the ship was leaving. The first port is Key West, the second is Grand Cayman, and the third is Cozumel. We left and returned from Ft. Lauderdale.
