BTW nliedel between not getting anything done today (lol) by reading and posting I actually did go pick up my first grader from school and we just got done with homework at his school there were signs everywhere and not hand written signs but nice signs that read "BULLY FREE ZONE"......I thought that was great and even spoke to his Teacher about it. That sends a good message and I hope someone who needs it parent or child gets it!

I have not read this entire thread, but I have read several bits and pieces of it over the course of my workday in between job duties. While I am not a parent, I obviously have an idea of how I would like to raise my children when I do have them (hopefully within the next couple of years :D ), but wanted to throw my 2 cents in.

It seems that parents don't want to tell their kids "no." So they let them run wild because it's easier to let them do as they please than it is to properly discipline them. It's also easier to let them do as they please in exchange for not having to listen to them scream and cry and watch them pout because they didn't get their way.

I am in my early 20s so I remember my bratty childhood and teenage years all too well, but my mother stood firm in disciplining me. She didn't care if I was unhappy that I didn't get my way or was crying and when I later became a teenager, she didn't care that I was angry at her for not allowing me go to a party when someone's parents wheren't there to chaperone. While I was upset with her at the time for the way I was "mistreated" ("But mom, all the other kids' parents are letting them go!"), I now look back on those years and am GLAD she stood firm in enforcing the rules. It has shaped me into the person I am today - and I thank her the most for teaching me how to be responsible, polite and respectful of others. When I was little, if I would cry or scream or act up in a public place, she would simply remove me from the situation and do what she needed to do to discipline me to show that is not proper behavior. If she'd have caved in and let me get out of doing chores because I didn't want to or let me go to parties were drugs were running rampant and bought me everything I wanted, I probably wouldn't be who I am today.

I guess what I'm saying to parents, from a former bratty kid/teenager perspective, is that you can't be afraid to discipline your children or tell them "no." So what if you have to put up with a little bit of pouting and crying. Remember, YOU are the parent, THEY are the child, THEY learn from YOU. If you allow them to act in a disrespectful manner toward other people, they will believe that type of behavior to be acceptable until you teach them otherwise. They will thank you for it one day.

DW & I were on the 4/9 Triumph Eastern Caribbean cruise... There were not very many kids on the ship & the ones that were, were very well behaved... Even the teens... The ship was sold out... If there were 200 kids on the ship, I would be surprised... DW & I have 2 boys... 15 & 13 yrs old... We've taken them on 1 cruise with my 2 nephews ages 14 & 11 yrs old... They had a blast & were very well behaved... (I told them it was a long swim back to shore if they misbehaved!!! :D It must have sunk in because they were good!!)

Bottom line - If there is bratty, obnoxious & disrespectful kids on board, I can almost guarantee you the parents don't give a rat's tail about them & probably in the casino smoking, drinking & gambling ALL day!... (Now there's nothing wrong with a drink from time to time and an hour or two in the casino but not all day!!!) The kids learn behavior from their parents... Kids are a reflection of their home life... My kids are far from perfect but I thank god everyday that my kids have fun & our home is full of laughter but I also am thankful that they are well behaved & respectful to others... So, if ya can't control your kids, then leave them with a relative at home & enjoy your cruise!!!

Get ready for your life to change, forever.

Where's she staying while you're off carousing on VV?

She'll be with my Brother and SIL. I can see their house from my front porch.

I'm just kidding with ya Liv...it's going to be great, you'll see. Daughters are amazing, and watching them become women is a gift. You're going to love every minute of it, I promise you

I know you are and I know it will. However watching them become women is NOT a gift. There is a reason for my grey and I'm convinced they are the cause of it:p

I know some of you have seen the show Nanny 911 or Supernanny. I have watched it 3 times and I was amazed not only at the behavior of the children but the parents behavior was even worse. Although the kids were absolute brats-you could tell why-the parents were constantly threatening punishment but hardly ever followed through with the threatened punishment.

I admit my son (who is 26 now) was nowhere near a perfect angel. I had to take him out of restaurants many a times. I am surprised sometimes he made it to 18 with all his limbs intact. I never ever once beat him but I did spank his behind when he got out of hand and at 26 he is a very respectful young man who still says yes mam/sir and no mam/sir to his elders and he doesn't seem any worse for it. His little pysche is not damaged a bit fom an occasional spanking.

What if she's plowed? LOL...

She's pretty exicted about the move but seems to think I'm going to allow her to "hang out" and all that. Told her that if she thinks her mom is strict....she'll think my house is a prison camp:eek: She did ask that I buy her a puppy though ane yes....I buckled.:o

As much as I love to have another, no. She asked me if I'd get her a Maltese but I'm not spending $1,400 for a pooch. Going to try and talk her out of that one and maybe a Sheltie or something. I had one when I was her age and they are so smart, loyal, obedient and great "watch" dogs! I know that once she gets here and I can get to a breeder and she can see and hold them, she'll fall in love with them in a second.

Mind you though, because my daughter is going to be living with me, that in no way changes my mind about kiddies cruising:p

Livtojump-I have a Maltese that if you were to catch me at the right time i would gladly give away for free. Really I wouldn't but just to let you know a little about this Maltese- my friends and employees call him DOGZILLA. He is very protective of his things and also of me.

While the problem described by the OP ended up on a cruise ship, it started -- as has been clearly demonstrated in all these posts -- at home. And it's not because of "society" and it's not because of principals and teachers not being able to whack kids. I DON'T want someone else whacking my kid. That's my job and privilige. ;)

Households aren't breaking down because of society, society is breaking down because of what's happening (or being allowed to happen) in the households.

Bingo!

And PS

I like B I G Dogs :D AKA real dogs ;)

But my best friend since 5th grade, who I still love like a sister had a Maltese growing up. Her name was Taffy and she was a very good dog..she was quite obese  so she walked funny...but she was cute...although she smelled realy bad from chronic ear and eye problems

"Since your child is such an out of control h*llun, have you considered the possibility that they may have food allergies? Surely your parenting skills aren't that deficient. It can be something as simple as being allergic to orange juice. You should have them checked by an physician."

You could always follow them to their cabin and slip a nice note under the door suggesting they get a clue. Isn't that what that little space under the cabin door is for???

I always had two simple rules...

1. when Mom says "zip it" you "zip it" period

2. if it's not yours...don't touch it (works everywhere...stores, visiting friends, etc etc etc)

Please don't feel insulted. I am deeply rooted in culture. and fight predjiuices daily.

I think this thread has stayed in what western culture is expecting of children thats all.

Though my opinion differs from your, I will respect it. That's all I have to say about this subject. Have a beautiful day...
