Can I Bring sanitizing Wipes on Board

I don't typically watch Dr. Oz. Question: What do most all anti-bacteria wipes have in them? Answer: Alcohol! What do D.O.D's have in them? Alcohol! I think I'd rather spend my vacation near the bar killing bacteria than in my room. :D But, to each his own.:cool:

I wasn't going to chime in, but decided what the heck.

 

When I was a kid, I played in the dirt, lived by the '5 second rule', etc. I rarely ever get sick, and if I do, it's very mild, and my immune system fights it off quickly. Several people have mentioned that over sanitizing and de-germing (I know, not a word) can actually decrease one's immune system to fight off germs. I think we have an epidemic of fear of getting sick. I think the anti-bacterial product companies are going to kill us all by making people believe they are the cure all for these diseases. Some on this board have said, what does it hurt if it makes you feel better? Well, it does hurt because you are not exposing yourself to those germs, and your immune system doesn't have to work, so when you do get exposed, it can't fight it off and you get sick. Also, over prescribing antibiotics is doing the same thing. I also don't agree with getting the flu shot, have never had one, and I have never gotten the flu. I have many friends that get the flu several times a year, and they get the flu shot. (but that's nother can of worms)

 

This being said, I am not talking about those with immune deficiencies due to cancer and the such. I understand about immune deficiencies, and those people need to take all the precautions necessary. But normal, healthy adults do not need to make themselves immune deficient by killing their own immune system by not exposing themselves to germs.

 

I absolutely believe this is true. However, for some of us middle age *ahem* folks, we were started on a lifetime of antibiotic use at a young age. I definitely, absolutely, positively have a destroyed immune system because of overuse of antibiotics.

 

I even had C-Diff once (deadly from overuse of antibiotics). I have also been hospitalized because of a staph infection so I could get IV antibiotics.

 

So while it is simple for some, for others like me... we are living this reality.

I always bring a ziploc with Clorox wipes and wipe down the room when I first arrive.

I've done this on one occasion when I was staying in a hotel room alone for 1 week. I don't like to do this in front of my daughter because I don't want her to be "OCD" about hotel rooms like I seem to be (for me it's the worst thing about traveling). She brings her own pillowcase (she found hair one time, so she was grossed out), but I bring my own sheets, pillow cases, face towel, and body towel. My husband used to shake his head at my sheets thing until he stayed at a really expensive hotel ($400+/night paid by his employer), got a really bad rash... and figured out that it was probably from the sheets because when he got into the bed, he didn't feel 100% sure the sheets were new, so now even he insists on us bringing the sheets :D

 

I do wipe down the remote, and I'll use the hotel water to spray the tub/shower before I get in. It's just a psychological thing. Once I do it, I'm fine whether it did anything for real or not :)

My daughter got very sick 2 years ago, and needed several organ transplants/removals. Her doctor basically told us we couldn't cruise for a year, but then gave us the ok. But she said to bring the clorox wipes, and wipe down everything in the cabin, tell her not to touch hand-rails, and she was also not allowed to eat or drink anything off-ship.

 

It was annoying, but do-able. We brought pre-packaged snacks for her in Mexico and Caribbean. Called special needs dept first, to request an extra-special cleaning of the room before we boarded. Needed doctor's note. Got permission to bring more than usual number non-alcoholic beverages for her.

 

She was fine for that cruise, and we had a wonderful vacation.

I have always brought Clorox wipes. I use them daily at home. The other day while in Home Depot, I ran across the neatest thing: small packages of Clorox wipes (about 8-10 per pkg.) They are about the size of those small packages of Kleenex tissues. I bought 4 packages (about .99 each). So easy to pack. Even the small 35 count round canister takes up valuable space. These are perfect!

Now I am getting overwhelmed with the thought of totally wiping down a cabin while I am starting my vacation :eek:. I have only been on 2 cruises and many land vacations and have always just cleaned the bathroom with Lysol before using it, the phone and remote. In the past year, I find myself not even wanting to touch an elevator button or if I use a public restroom, after I wash my hands, I make sure I have a paper towel to shut the faucet off and to open the door. Ever try opening the door with a paper towel in your hand and then trying to toss the paper towel in the trash before the door closes? It is not easy :eek:. Yes, I will bring my Clorox wipes and clean the darn cabin. Of course, I am use to carrying my own saniitizer in my purse. Now I have to wipe the buttons in the casino too? Will I ever relax on this cruise :rolleyes:?

Oh, the horrors of wasting perfectly good vodka........

But maybe that can be my excuse for smuggling? "No, Officer - I need it to clean my hands while in the Casino!"

Except the hand sanitizer on the ship is Purell and does not contain the ingredient that kills Norovirus, where Clorox wipes DO.

 

 

Tell us what ingredient in Clorox wipes kills Norovirus. After all that is the most important message. Just exactly what kills Norovirus, not brand names, hype etc. Tell us WHAT kills Norovirus the best so we can all know.

After getting sick on one of our cruises, :eek: yuck!!....we take the wipes and give the cabin a wipe down. I don't know if it really helps but it makes me feel like I'm doing something to prevent a repeat of that experience. We also try to wash our hands every chance we get especially when we return to the cabin. Can't hurt!

Please make sure that you wipe them down every time the steward is in your cabin, or that you go out and touch anything anywhere on the ship. If you don't do that there is no point in doing it when you first board because the bacteria and viruses are just replenished whenever any of those things happen.

 

If you want to stay healthy the best thing to do is to make sure that you are exposed to germs all the time so that you can develop a good immune system, and then wash your hands.

Amen to that. We have and never will own all this antiseptic stuff. Your immune system needs the workout to stay strong.
