Spirit view of Glacier from port or starboard Side?

For those who have sailed on the Spirit, is the view of the glaicer from the port (left facing forward)side or the starboard (side). We have a starboard side balcony cabin and I'm curious whether we'll be able to view it from our balcony. How long did they stay at the glacier?

Ohhh, good question! What is your sailing date? We sail on June 19th. Anyone out there that can enlighten us on the glacier view?

Bon Voyage!

If starboard is left, then no, you can't really see the Sawyer Glacier from there, unless the Captain positions the ship different than he did during the May 15 cruise. The best view was from the front and from the right side of the ship. But to get the best view, you needed to be on the top of the ship and outside. Also, if the glacier is calving, like it was with us, it's awesome to hear it.

Oh, and I think we "parked" in front of the glacier for quite a while (not sure exactly how long it was). We had an expert on glaciers on board (Bill Ebersoll, I think), so he was on the PA system giving us information at the glacier. And on the way in to the glacier.

Pam, starboard is right when facing forward. So is that the side the glacier is on? (I'm hoping the honeymooners next to me will leave me in peace long enough to enjoy it from my balcony.)

Hi there! Just got off this morning and had the same experience as Pam. Our best view was from the front and right side of the ship. It was a pretty awesome sight even though it was raining pretty hard so we watched from the top front for awhile and then went to our balcony on the right side of the ship and had a great view.

20years,

Overall, I thought it was great. It was our first cruise so we have nothing to compare it to but I still had a nice relaxing time. Our room steward's were wonderful! Arnel and Rose Marie...so friendly all the time (As were all of the staff!) As we were docking in Prince Rupert, the casino manager was standing beside us and he told us that the first week had been pretty tough with it being the first Alaska trip for the Spirit. He said that the second week was going much better from the staff's point of view. The ship is really beautiful.

A couple of suggestions:

1. Plan on long lines for embarkation so that you are not annoyed by the process. Use the time to get to know a few fellow passengers.

2. Eat lunch before getting on the ship. We heard that Windows was open during lunch but they closed at 2 so by the time we got on(process took about an hour and a half), they were closed and the buffet was the only other option. The food there was okay the rest of the trip but on embarkation day it was terrible.

3. If you want to see the shows, make sure you eat very early (5:30 for the 1st show, 7:30 for the later show) We rarely had lines waiting at Windows or the Garden Room but we usually went at 8:15 or so. (I heard there were lines at 7:30) The tradeoff was that we were never done with dinner before the 2nd show started -usually at 9:15 or 9:30. The food at both was always wonderful, it just took a while to get through.

Have a wonderful time!

Jean

We were on the bow of the ship, and that is where you get the best views of the glacier going in. Once in, the captain made a 180, so the aft part of the ship got a great view. The sides got views on the side. Also, I think the starboard side got better views of the glacier than the port side.

You know, I was on the ship for a week and I still can't figure out which is starboard and which is port! I know aft and forward, though. My balcony was on deck 11 on the right side of the ship. I really didn't go back there to see how the view was when the ship was parked in front of the glacier.

I'm sorry you had rain. We had sun every single day of the cruise (May 15-22). We were being told constantly that it usually rained and we were extremely lucky to have such spectacular weather.

Wishing all of you future cruisers on the Spirit a good week of weather, good service, and a lot of new friends!

left and port both have 4 letters-that's the only way I can remember that. Otherwise I can't remember the words for any other side of the ship!!!!!!!!!!!!

What times are the shows?? Is it possible to see an early show & then eat afterwards??

Ilene, that is EXACTLY how I remember which side is which! I have a word for remembering the aft is the "backside" ship too...aft and this word (refering to one's backside) both have 3 letters in it... icon_wink.gif. Sorry, not meaning to offend anyone, but hey, it works for ME! icon_rolleyes.gif

Bon Voyage!

Most of the shows are at 7:30 and 9:30. The dining rooms open at 5:30 and the last order can be taken at 9:30 (dining rooms close at 10:00). So, if you eat at 5:30 or 6:00, you can see the 7:30 AND the 9:30 shows! See the 7:30 show and you can still get into one of the dining rooms. Freestyle at it's best!!!

Depends on how the captain positioned the ship. We were in a port, forward balcony and our friends were in starboard midship balconies- we both got great views of sawyer glacier.

As for the shows - definitely check your freestyle dailies. Certain acts were shown only once at 8pm to 8:30pm. icon_cool.gificon_smile.gificon_cool.gif
