Wait list for shore excursions?

There are 12 of us sailing on the Wind July 21. The ship excursion to Fern Grotto is currently sold out. They told me they would put us on a wait-list, also they said if there were many requests that they would add an additional bus. Has this happened to anyone? If so, what was the outcome? Thank you all for your help!

Hi Sue. This same thing happened to us a couple of years ago when we wanted to book a dolphin encounter (Cozumel.) We were wait-listed, but since no one canceled, we weren't able to do the excursion through the ship. We ended up finding a tour operator at the port that took us to the same place that the ship's excurions went...and for less money! So, even if you can't book your excursion through the ship, you may luck out by simply looking around for a tour operator once you get off the ship.

It always pays to seek third party vendors to see what you can get. Many you can pre-book with. Often you can get a tour more tailored to what you want to see. Some ship tours include stops at souviner stops as part of your tour time which I don't like. If I want a shopping tour, I'll take one.

The caveat is that if your port times are short - they can be risky as the ship will not wait for you if you are not on a ship sponsored tour. Also be sure to check with the operator on cancelation policies - most are flexible as they understand missed ports etc.
