What to do in Freeport, Grand Bahama?

Recommended Posts

There is not much info on the Ports of Call board on Freeport. What do you recommend? Is there anything to do just off the pier? What beach do you like? Thanks :)

I had wanted to take a cab over to Lucaya Beach, but another poster pointed out that the ship (VOS- from NJ) is in port from 6:30 am - 1:30pm - by the time you get off the ship there really wouldnt be any time. I guess stayin onboard is what I will be doing.

There is a small shopping area and a port side bar right where the ship will dock. Be sure to take some pictures of the old cruise ships that are docked off in the back of the harbor. Those are on their way to be broken up some day and your pictures will be all that is left of them.

Check out the Bahamas board in the Port of Call area as there are several posts there about nice beaches that aren't far away (short taxi ride) from the port. Here is one of them.

Have a great next cruise.

By the way this is not one of my favor ports. We have been there once and that was probably plenty for me.

The old ships are all gone now... The former EUGENIO COSTA (Big Red Boat II) is currently on it's way to the breakers. The former ROTTERDAM V (Rembrandt) is currently in Gibraltar having it's asbestos removed and will restored and moving to it's new home in Rotterdam for use as a floating hotel. All of the other former Premier ships that were stored in Freeport are long gone.

Take a taxi to the casino. Adjacent is one of the two shopping areas (can't remember the name) but OK if you are into shopping. However, just across the street is the Sheraton, which has a nice beach that is public access. If you are discreet, you can have a dip (illegally) in one of their pools.

How far is it by Taxi?

My recollection is about a 15 min ride. There is a taxi stand at the port, just tell the driver that you want to go to the Sheraton, that will get you to the right place. Cost is $5 per person each way. They will show you where to get the taxi for return. You might have to wait a few minutes on return until they have a full van.
