criminal record and going to canada

Recommended Posts

hey everyone! first post here...just looking for insight on other cruisers' experiences.

i called the princess hotline today about a cruise my relatives and i taking that starts and ends in san francisco, ca. (we are all us citizens) it's a cruise to alaska, and of course, there's a stop in canada. my main concern is that one person in our group has an infraction record of petty theft from 3 years ago. since the cruise starts and ends in the US, will she still be able to board the ship w/o any problems? i would assume she would stay onboard during the canada portion so as to avoid any conflict.

we've already tried calling the canada consulates in the states, and have been directed in a roundabout manner by the canadian border patrol--to no avail (a bunch of automations, recordings, dropped calls). since this cruise is coming up fast, anyone who has past similar past experiences and was able to board the princess ship with no problems, please chime in!

it will put a lot of our stresses at ease. thank you thank you!!!

American's with criminal records (this includes DUI 25 yrs ago) can be and will be refused entry into Canada . This said when you check in for the cruise they might be denied boarding:mad: for the cruise because of the conviction. I have heard of people being denied boarding in Seattle on a cruise to Alaska because of a criminal record.

We went on cruise to Alaska and did not try the excutsion to Victoria. Had a wonderful time and hope you do to.

When you board the ship you are going on a closed loop cruise, there is no customs involved and Princess does not have access to crim records. Curiously there is no requirement for cruise ships to provide passenger manifests to Canadian authorities, it is on a voluntary basis if done at all. Worst case scenario, and that is pretty remote, is your companion will be discreetly advised before arriving in Victoria that they may not leave the ship. Enjoy your cruise.

All passenger names are supplied to the Canadian authorities before arrival in Victoria . Some people must supply a Canadian visa to do closed loop cruises from Seattle . Canada now has the the TVR act (Temporary Visa Requirement) , it requires some people from North & Central America to get a visa to enter Canada . Cruise lines are required to check for this visa and if not to deny boarding . I've heard there has been at least 12 cases of boarding being denied in Seattle based cruises because they people didn't have the proper documentation ie Canadian Visa

Canada currently does have access to US criminal records .

I have no idea where your information comes from but you may find the attached report interesting reading. The poster has said they are American citizens and therefore are outside the scope of the TVR.

Every time I book a cruise with Princess that goes to Alaska fro Seattle or Vancouver . A warning pops up about the WHTI and the TRV.

Here is what is attached to the cruise contract

CANADA TEMPORARY RESIDENT VISA (TRV) REQUIREMENT

If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, nor a U.S. or Canadian permanent

resident holding a valid Alien/Permanent Resident Card, you may require a

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to visit or transit Canada. To verify if you

require a TRV, visit http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp or contact

your local Canadian consulate. If you are a citizen of a country requiring the

visa, the TRV must be obtained in advance. Visa processing times vary by

citizenship and may take up to 45 days to process. Please be aware that the

visa must be obtained regardless of whether you choose to remain on board or

go ashore. Without the visa, you will be denied boarding without refund of the

cruise or cruisetour fare.

Please go back and read the orginal post.....the OP's companion is an American citizen and therefore is outside of the scope of the TRV....in other words what you have posted in red does not apply.

I just returned from an Alaskan cruise, Aug 25th, on the Golden Princess. I was called by passenger services 3 hours per to arriving in Victoria. I was given some song and dance story about interviewing a few passengers upon arrival prior to our ship being cleared. I was told to wait in my cabin as I would be collected upon arrival and taken to the Canadian Authorities. I Was escorted off the ship with my passport and cruise card. It was a set up by Princess and the Canadian authorities. They had every intention of taking me into custody, problem was It was mistaken identify, not me. There was on another male, not so lucky. The Canadians immediately took him into another room and most ikely into custody. Canada apologized for trouble, Princess not even a thankk you for your cooperation. I'm an Elite Princess traveler and not too happy with them for their lies and deception.

I can understand your upset, anyone would be under the same circumstances. However, there are two matters here, you are presuming the other party was taken into custody, you don't know that to be the case. Also, if you are correct, please pause and think about it, nobody is taken into custody for a crime where a sentence has been served or punishment met. If the other person was in fact taken into custody there was likely an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
